Driving on the road
No national vignette. Most Autostrada (A) roads are distance-based tolls. SS roads are mostly free; SR, SP and urban streets are free. Watch the signs at the on-ramp.
Ticket in / pay out, or TELEPASS. Lanes: white cash or card; blue card self-service only; yellow TELEPASS (do not stop).
Sample car fares (as of February 2026 — confirm on the calculator): A1 Milano–Napoli ~€57.10; A4 Torino–Trieste ~€47.40; A14 Bologna–Taranto ~€55.10; A22 Brennero–Modena ~€22.80.

Free-flow (no barriers) on A36 Pedemontana Lombarda, A59 Como ring, A60 Varese ring, plus A33 Asti–Cuneo and Corda Molle Ospitaletto–Montichiari (from 1 Mar 2026). Without TELEPASS, pay within 15 days on the concessionaire site (e.g. apl.pedemontana.com).
Lost ticket = maximum tariff for the section + €2–5 admin. Ignore a notice and the fine can reach €338. Letters go to the registered owner, including foreign plates.
Extra Alpine tunnels with their own high/seasonal tariffs: Mont Blanc, Fréjus (IT–FR) and Gran San Bernardo (IT–CH).
Electric vehicles may receive discounts on some operators — treat as “may” and confirm before you travel.
Speed limits for cars: motorway 130 / express 110 / rural 90 / urban 50. Alcohol 0.5‰.
Green Card is required; missing it can cost €849–3,396. Same toll rates for UA plates as for everyone else.
