Driving on the road
e-Matrica on most motorways (M1, M3, M5, M7…). No barriers — ANPR cameras. Category D1: cars ≤3.5 t, motorcycles, maximum 7 seats including the driver.
60-minute grace: if you enter a paid motorway by mistake, buy a vignette within 60 minutes and there is no fine.
Official D1 prices from 1 Jan 2026 (HUF, VAT incl.): 1 day 5,550; 10 days 6,900; month 11,170; annual national 61,760. County annual 7,190 HUF; new M1 regional annual 15,000 HUF. EUR reseller quotes are not the official tariff (approx. €14 / €17 / €28 / €155 — approximate only).

Fine: about 26,640 HUF (~€66) if paid within 60 days, then about 91,780 HUF (~€227).
Official free stretches in 2026: M4 Vecsés–airport and M4 Törökszentmiklós–Kisújszállás; M60 Pécs bypass; the entire M8 and M80; some M9. M6 to the Croatian border is now paid — do not treat it as free. A new M1 regional annual exists.
Studs are banned. A reflective vest for every passenger must sit in the cabin, not the boot. Dipped beam 24/7.
Speed limits for cars: motorway 130 / express 110 / rural 90 / urban 50. Cameras have essentially no tolerance — 3–5 km/h over can be ticketed.
Green Card covering the whole stay is required. UA plates need e-Matrica — no exemption.
No published EV vignette discount — pay the D1 car tariff.
