Driving on the road

E-vignette is mandatory on most Autobahn (A) and Schnellstraße (S). Bundesstraßen and local roads are free unless a special tunnel. ANPR checks the ASFINAG register.

Official 2026 ASFINAG prices for cars ≤3.5 t (cat B): 1 day €9.60; 10 days €12.80; 2 months €32.00; annual €106.80. The 1-day vignette is digital only.

Official shop: asfinag.at / shop.asfinag.at. Online, 1-day and 10-day start immediately; 2-month and annual bought by consumers start on the 18th day (withdrawal period) unless bought at a local partner. Annual 2026: 1 Dec 2025–31 Jan 2027. From 2027 the vignette is digital only.

Fine: €200 Ersatzmaut from 1 Jan 2026 (was €120); unpaid cases become an administrative €300–3,000. Notices go to the owner, including foreign plates.

Sondermaut extra (cars, 2026, not in the vignette): A10 Tauern €15; A13 Brenner €12.50; S16 Arlberg €13; A11 Karawanken €9; A9 Gleinalm €12; A9 Bosruck €7. A13 can be used without a vignette; A12 Inntal still needs one. Großglockner, Gerlos and Felbertauern are tourist roads, not ASFINAG Sondermaut.

The wartime free Autobahn for UA plates ended 31 October 2025. A vignette (and Sondermaut) has been required again since 1 November 2025.

Speed limits for cars ≤3.5 t: motorway 130 (minimum 60 except congestion or weather) / express 100 / rural 100 / urban 50. Section Control (average speed) is common.

Alcohol 0.49‰ (0.0‰ if the licence is under 2 years). Winter tyres 1 Nov–15 Apr when snow or ice. Keep a vest in the cabin.

Green Card required for foreign and UA-registered cars.

No published EV vignette discount — pay the standard car tariff.
