Driving on the road
No vignette (unlike Austria, Czechia or Slovenia). Autoceste are paid by the kilometre — you pay only the stretch you use.
Most A-class motorways are paid (green signs). A1 Zagreb–Split–Dubrovnik is the spine. Some D/S roads near borders or bridges may be paid. County and local roads are free.
Official class I (cars) sample (as of January 2026): Zagreb–Split €26.40. Full table: hac.hr toll rates. Pay cash, card or ENC.
Extra: Učka tunnel (A8) is charged on top (class I examples about €4–8 depending on entry). Krk bridge and Pelješac bridge are free — Pelješac reaches Dubrovnik without crossing Bosnia.
Motorway without a ticket or ENC: fine from €150. Unpaid Učka-type objects ~€200; repeat or late payment up to ~€400. Foreign owners get mail.
Speed limits for cars ≤3.5 t: motorway 130 / express 110 / rural 90 / urban 60.
Alcohol 0.5‰. Winter tyres 15 Nov–15 Apr if snow or ice. Mandatory kit: triangle, first-aid, vest, extinguisher, spare wheel.
Green Card required for foreign and UA-registered cars. Same tariffs as everyone else — no UA discount.
ANPR at entry and exit. Keep the ticket until you pay. Summer Adriatic traffic is heavy — ENC or a card-ready lane saves time.
There is no Croatian car vignette to buy in advance; only the stretch you drive is billed.
