Germany
Planning a trip to Germany? On this page you will find information about motorway vignettes, toll payment methods and rules for driving on paid roads.
Driving on the road
No vignette for passenger cars. Autobahns are free for Pkw — the general rule, not a wartime privilege. There is no Pkw-Maut in force (the planned infrastructure charge was struck down by the CJEU, case C-591/17, and was never applied).
Lkw-Maut applies only to goods vehicles >3.5 t (Toll Collect / EETS) on Autobahn and Bundesstraßen — not to ordinary cars. A few private concession tunnels (Warnow, Herrentunnel) charge all vehicles; they are not federal Autobahn Maut.
Many cities run Umweltzone low-emission areas. Older combustion cars need a green sticker; EVs typically sit in the cleanest class.
Green Card is required for UA-registered cars.
No general motorway speed limit on many stretches; where a limit is signed, it is enforced. Watch roadworks and 80–120 km/h zones.
