Sales figures for electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids in July 2026
In July 2026, 78,609 new electric cars were registered in Germany, 6 percent fewer than in June. Nevertheless, their market share rose to 29.3 percent, with the Skoda Elroq leading among the models.

The number of new passenger car registrations in Germany reached 268,068 vehicles in July 2026. This represents a decrease of 28,310 vehicles, or 10 percent, compared to June 2026, when 296,378 cars were newly registered. The decline in electric vehicles was smaller: 78,609 battery-electric vehicles were registered in July, 5,448 fewer, or 6 percent less, than the 84,057 units registered in June. As a result, electric vehicles now account for 29.3 percent of the market, up from 28.4 percent in the previous month. Plug-in hybrids saw 30,609 new registrations, a decrease of 1,603 vehicles, or 5 percent, from the 32,212 units registered in June. Their current market share is 11.4 percent. Together, these two propulsion types make up nearly 40 percent of the new car market.

Interpretation of the Numbers
The decline in electric vehicles was less severe in July at 6 percent, compared to the 10 percent drop in the overall market, which allowed the market share to increase despite falling absolute numbers. There were significant shifts in the rankings. The Skoda Elroq took the top spot with 3,541 new registrations, showing a slight increase from June. The biggest jump among the top 10 was made by the Volkswagen ID.4, whose registrations nearly doubled from 1,674 to 3,241, pushing it up 15 places to third place. The Volkswagen ID.7 also saw an increase from 2,248 to 3,247 units. Outside the top 10, the Ford Explorer Electric (from 1,172 to 1,767), the Renault Twingo Electric (from 759 to 1,295), and the MG MG4 Electric (from 728 to 1,212) all saw double-digit gains in their rankings.
In the case of plug-in hybrids, development progressed more slowly. The BYD Seal U remained at the top with 1,821 new registrations, followed by the Volkswagen Tiguan and the Mercedes GLC with almost unchanged figures. The most significant increases were seen in the Mercedes E-Class (1,221 compared to 846) and the Volkswagen Passat (839 compared to 731), while the BYD Atto 2 dropped from 1,319 to 906 units, and the Volvo XC60 fell out of the top 10.
In July, Volkswagen’s group brands dominated among manufacturers: Volkswagen had three models in the top 10 with the ID.7, ID.4, and ID.3, while Skoda had two more with the Elroq and Enyaq, plus the Audi Q6 e-tron and Cupra Born. Throughout 2026, Volkswagen led the manufacturer rankings with 59,323 electric vehicles, ahead of Skoda with 43,054 and BMW with 38,688 units. Mercedes, Audi, and Tesla were closely followed with 32,220, 29,840, and 29,221 new registrations respectively. In terms of model rankings for the year, the Skoda Elroq led with 23,679 units, followed by the Volkswagen ID.3 with 20,460 and the Tesla Model Y with 20,000 new registrations. Among plug-in hybrids, the Volkswagen Tiguan (8,303), BYD Seal U (8,144), and Volvo XC60 (8,084) topped the annual rankings.
