Smart #2 revealed in MIIT documentation. Finally, a Smart that looks like Smart

A new Smart #2 has appeared in the publicly available registers of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). For the first time since Geely acquired the Smart brand, the Smart #2 looks exactly like a Smart. It’s hard to say whether it will sell well, as its biggest issue has always been the poor value for money — but the Chinese seem aware of this, which is why they were able to take over a brand invented in Europe.

Smart #2. Weight of 1.13 tons, LFP battery with 35.7 kWh capacity, engine output of 60 kW/82 hp

The LFP cells are supplied by CATL, which is considered high-end in China since CATL is generally slightly more expensive than competitors. The battery capacity of the Smart #2 has not been disclosed in the documentation, but judging from its weight being about 300 kilograms higher than the previous diesel version, “target 35.7 kWh” fits well—such a difference corresponds to approximately 35-40 kWh of LFP battery capacity. With Geely’s body design and powertrains, this should yield a realistic range of 200-250 kilometers, and in typical Smart driving conditions (i.e., in the city), even over 300 kilometers per charge.

The engine with a power output of 60 kW/82 HP will drive the rear wheels. The Smart #2’s top speed is 140 km/h, and it is expected to be 2.751 meters long with a wheelbase of 1.875 meters (along with a width of 1.669 m and a height of 1.555 m), making it clearly the equivalent of the Smart ForTwo. The model is set to make its debut at the 2026 Paris Motor Show in October (source), with Europe able to purchase it only in 2027. The Smart #2 will be produced in China, which will make it difficult for it to gain a foothold on the Old Continent due to additional tariffs on electric vehicles.

According to recent statements, Geely is “still working” on setting the price of the model as low as possible, with an initial price around 20,000 euros, equivalent to 86,000 Polish zlotys. It’s possible this price will apply to a version with a reduced battery capacity, similar to the one seen in the previous Smart EQ models [editorial speculation from Elektrowozu]. The MIIT documentation doesn’t mention this, nor does it refer to cabrio or extended versions (such as the Smart ForFour), which were conceived to boost interest in the car.
