The new Denza Z9 S features a record CLTC range of 1,100 units. This is more than Nio’s vehicles with semi-solid-state batteries.

BYD introduced the Denza Z9S /more logically spelled: Denza Z9 S/ to its Chinese lineup and claimed that as the first production electric vehicle, it boasts a record-breaking CLTC range of 1,100 kilometers. The Nio ET5, equipped with 150 (~137) kWh batteries, was promised a maximum CLTC range of 1,055 kilometers, so 1,100 kilometers sounds impressive. Although media reports suggest the vehicle is powered by batteries with a capacity of only 102.3 kWh, Elektrowozu’s editorial team believes it refers to the 122.5 kWh package known from the Denza Z9 GT.

Let’s start with the price: The Denza Z9 S is priced at 319,800 yuan, which according to the conversion rates used by Polish distributors would be approximately 384,000 złoty. For this amount, we get the weakest version with an LFP battery having a capacity of 102.3 kWh and one motor driving the rear wheels with a power output of 370 kW/503 HP — this is the confirmed information. The offer also includes, again per the editorial team’s opinion, a larger battery that works with one or three motors. Based on the declared ranges of 780, 920, and 1,100 CLTC units, we have the following configurations: 1/ smaller battery + three motors, 2/ larger battery + three motors, 3/ larger battery + one motor.

Before analyzing these figures, let’s look at the dimensions: The Denza Z9 S is an E-class vehicle, measuring 5.09 meters in length with a wheelbase of 3.025 meters (height: 1.49 m, width: 1.98 m). It’s difficult to find a direct equivalent for it in Europe, as cars either have lengths significantly under 5 meters (such as the Audi A6) or are stretched to around 5.2 meters (like the Mercedes EQS).

The Denza Z9 S’s CLTC range of 1,100 units surpasses the current records in China held by the following models: 1/ Denza Z9 RWD (1,068 units), 2/ Nio ET5 S-SSB 150 kWh (1,055 units), 3/ Denza Z9 GT RWD (1,036 units), but it is likely not the highest value in the world. What is 1,100 CLTC units in terms of range? It’s approximately 859 WLTP units (at a ratio of 1.28:1), 516 kilometers at 120 km/h, or 395 kilometers at 140 km/h. It should be noted that the calculations by Elektrowozu’s editorial team might be overly optimistic: the Denza Z9 GT, with 820 CLTC units, has a certified WLTP range of 600 units, which corresponds to a ratio of 1.367:1 rather than the usual 1.28:1 we use.

BYD claims that its record-breaking range “is not meant to be remembered, but to be forgotten” (source). This means it’s large enough that drivers should stop worrying about it. Moreover, the vehicle is equipped with a BYD Blade II battery that allows charging from 10% to 70% in just 5 minutes. This applies to all versions, from the cheapest to the most expensive and powerful one with three engines, delivering 0.89 MW/1,210 HP of power.

Other interesting features

The Denza Z9 S comes standard with DiSus-A air suspension, God’s Eye 5.0 autopilot, and a maneuverable rear axle that allows the vehicle to turn in circles with a diameter of 9.5 (!) meters. Apple CarPlay can be activated via the window in this car, and the same applies to Android Auto. The trunk capacity is 470 liters, with an additional 120 liters of storage space in the front designated as a “frunk.” A spoiler extends from the rear, and in the Chinese version, the autopilot operates using a lidar.

In China, the Denza brand is used by BYD to sell its top-tier, most fully equipped vehicles. In Europe and the Middle East, the situation is slightly different: in addition to Denza models, the Fangchengbao Bao cars also carry the same label to avoid confusing consumers.
