The Audi A2 e-tron is the most efficient Audi in history. Almost on par with the Tesla Model Y Long Range RWD — impressive performance!

The Elektrowoz editorial team’s assumptions were confirmed: Audi engineers drew from the concepts used during the development of the gasoline-powered Audi A2. The Audi A2 e-tron is the most efficient and economical Audi in history, as it requires 12.8 kWh/100 km according to the WLTP cycle [preliminary data], which is almost as low as that of the market leader, the Tesla Model Y LR RWD (12.7 kWh/100 km; source). What are the downsides? Achieving low energy consumption requires an additional optional “Performance Package,” about which little is known.

New LFP battery, new Performance Package
Audi A2 e-tron, other interesting facts
The low energy consumption allows the car to achieve the best range in the MEB+ RWD model lineup, as we noted a few weeks ago. With the largest battery, likely 84 (79) kWh, and rear-wheel drive, the Audi A2 e-tron promises a WLTP range of up to 649 units. The lowest energy consumption, at 12.8 kWh/100 km, is achieved by the version equipped with a 140 kW/190 HP engine and a new 61 kWh LFP battery, though its range has not been specified.

The price of the Audi A2 e-tron will start at 38,200 euros (Germany). The version described in the article, with a larger battery and more powerful engine, will be more expensive, likely around 180,000 to 190,000 Polish zlotys.
A new LFP battery, a new performance package
The battery is interesting as it has not been available in Audi’s MEB+ model lineup before. Since Audi typically specifies gross capacity in press releases, and LFP batteries have smaller buffers due to a flatter discharge curve, Elektrowoz editorial team has tentatively assumed the package has a capacity of 61 (58) kWh, meaning drivers will have 58 kWh available. These figures are confirmed by Audi’s diagrams, suggesting that the Li-NCx 63 (59) kWh battery will be dropped from MEB platform vehicles, as the LFP 61 (58) kWh package will simply be cheaper.

Audi claims that its drag coefficient Cx has been reduced to 0.24, which is a significant achievement at the start of the C segment. Suffice to say that the Audi TT, which was quite rounded in design, had a Cx of 0.29, the standard Audi A2 had 0.28, while the aerodynamically optimized A2 TDI version reached 0.25. Unfortunately, it’s not known what components are included in the “Performance Package,” but we do know that without it, energy consumption according to WLTP standards could rise as high as 13.7 kWh/100 km (on par with the Tesla Model 3 LR RWD).

The company emphasizes that the A2 e-tron features specially designed air channels around the front wheels, an active air intake cover at the bottom (usually closed and opens under specific conditions), and a high-efficiency inverter based on silicon carbide. The iron plates in the engine have been reduced to 0.2 mm, and when stationary, the windings are in a delta configuration, allowing the vehicle to consume less energy at higher operating speeds. Additional features include low-friction oil and a gear ratio of 10.2:1 (source), compared to 10:1 in the first VW ID.3.

Thanks to its “optimized cooling strategy,” the loss during charging from a wall charger is only 10.4 percent. This is an excellent result, as most cars experience losses in the double digits. It was worth it for Audi to work on this aspect, as it is included in the energy consumption figures during driving according to WLTP. We also learn that the new A2 can power external electrical devices (V2L) or even a household appliance (V2H). To use the latter function, a wallbox DC, that is, a car charger that uses direct current, is required.
