Not everyone needs 400 kilometers of range to commute to and from work. With that in mind, Volkswagen has started pre-orders for the ID. Cross, its smallest electric SUV, featuring a smaller battery with a net capacity of 37 kWh that delivers up to 324 kilometers of range according to the WLTP cycle.
The Volkswagen ID. Cross was introduced in mid-July and was previously available only with the largest battery option, at 52 kWh. The new version is aimed at those who mainly drive in the city, make short trips, and want to pay less to enter this vehicle category. A smaller battery means a cheaper car to buy and operate.
Two power options and front-wheel drive

The 37 kWh battery can be paired with two motors: one at 85 kW (116 hp) and another at 99 kW (135 hp), both delivering a maximum torque of 290 Nm. In either case, the top speed is 160 kilometers per hour, so it’s more than sufficient for highway driving.
The certified fuel consumption ranges from 14.7 to 13.8 kWh per 100 kilometers for the 116-hp version, and from 16.9 to 14.6 kWh for the 135-hp variant. Above that is the 155 kW (211 hp) version, which always comes with the larger battery.
LFP Battery and 90 kW Fast Charging

The 37 kWh battery uses lithium iron phosphate (LFP), while the 52 kWh version employs nickel, manganese, and cobalt (NMC) chemistry, which offers higher energy density. Both are part of the group’s new unified cell design with cell-to-pack technology, which installs cells directly into the pack without intermediate modules.
In fast charging, the smaller version supports up to 90 kW of DC power and can go from 10% to 80% charge in about 23 minutes. The 52 kWh version reaches 105 kW and takes around 24 minutes for the same charge level. On AC charging, both models charge at 11 kW.
The same car inside and out

Volkswagen does not compromise on this concept just because it uses a smaller battery. The ID. Cross retains its SUV body style, spacious interior, and large screens. This concept is also available in its group siblings: the Skoda Epiq, Volkswagen ID. Polo, and CUPRA Raval.
The entry-level trim, Match, includes front and rear parking sensors and mobile connectivity via App Connect. The Life and Style trims offer additional features, and depending on the level, they come with Connected Travel Assist, which uses data from connected vehicles to enhance assisted driving. Optional upgrades include a Harman Kardon sound system, panoramic sunroof, and electric seats with 12 adjustments and massage functions.
Price and Production in Navarra
The price of the 85 kW ID. Cross with a 37 kWh battery starts at 20,500 euros, including discounts and promotions. The smaller battery is available in three trims: Match, Life, and Style. The production lines at the factory in Landaben, Navarra, have already begun manufacturing the first units of the ID. Cross, with deliveries set to begin almost immediately. Below 21,000 euros, even after discounts, the ID. Cross becomes a highly attractive option for those looking for their first electric vehicle. It remains to be seen how much it costs without discounts, what the price of the 99 kW version is, and when the first deliveries will arrive.
