The XPeng G9L EREV traveled 1,403.8 km without refueling or charging. It is still a CLTC test, but the result is impressive.

On August 20, XPeng announced that its G9L Super Range Extender model completed a drive around the uninhabited Lop Nur region in Xinjiang. The car traveled 1,403.8 km without refueling or recharging, and still had 41 km of range left upon arrival. For drivers in Europe, one thing is crucial: it’s not an electric vehicle but an EREV, so the record mainly comes from its hybrid powertrain and energy management system.
The route started in Shanshan, Xinjiang, and ended in Jiuquan, Gansu. The test vehicle was an XPeng G9L 1602 AWD Ultra with optional 22-inch wheels. The declared combined range according to CLTC standards, with a full tank and fully charged battery, was 1,517 km, so the car actually achieved 95.11% of that value.
This still looks impressive even after accounting for China’s optimistic CLTC standards. Especially since this wasn’t a leisurely drive around a city.
The conditions were harsh, yet average fuel consumption was low
XPeng states that during the drive, the vehicle climbed over 1,200 meters in elevation. The ambient temperature reached 44.2 degrees Celsius, while the surface temperature was 79 degrees Celsius. Additionally, the car traveled for over 300 kilometers outside cellular network coverage.
The average fuel consumption was 4.5 liters per 100 kilometers, and the average energy consumption was 3.2 kWh per 100 kilometers. On paper, these figures are quite impressive, though we should remember that EREV systems perform well in such scenarios. Much of the workload falls on the combustion generator rather than the traction battery itself.
XPeng also provided another result, this time for the battery version. The G9L 702 Max covered 823.3 km in a media test in Shenzhen at a temperature of 38 degrees Celsius, with an average energy consumption of 11 kWh/100 km. The manufacturer claims this represents 122.5% of the advertised range. Here, a red flag should be raised, as urban testing in hot weather and under local methodologies can significantly inflate the results.
G9L is XPeng’s new global flagship model
The G9L is set to be XPeng’s next flagship model for global markets. Development took 3 years, and the vehicle was prepared to meet over 3,000 homologation requirements in 64 countries and regions. The total testing distance reached 6.74 million km, with road tests conducted in 26 countries and regions.
The model made its public debut and started pre-sales on August 11. It is available in BEV and EREV versions, totaling 6 models, with prices starting at 259,800 yuan, which is approximately 139,000–140,000 Polish zlotys based on a simple exchange rate. The official market launch is set for September.
Before sales begin, the G9L will appear at the 2026 Chengdu Auto Show, which starts on August 21. XPeng will also bring there the G9L Black Gold Package, X9 Black Warrior Package, a new package for the MONA M03, as well as the IRON robot and solutions from the Physical AI domain alongside the vehicles.
This test drive doesn’t yet show how well the G9L performs on German highways at 140 km/h, but it does show one thing: XPeng is heavily promoting EREV models alongside traditional BEVs today. What do you think? Would such a large SUV with a range extender make sense in Europe, or is it already a dead end?
