In August, Webasto began producing the high-performance battery system for the new all-electric Mercedes-AMG GT 4-door coupe at its facility in Schierling, Bavaria. According to the supplier, the order includes both module assembly and pack assembly. This means the company is taking on a significant role in the industrialization of the high-voltage batteries developed by Mercedes-AMG. Mass production takes place on highly automated production lines at Webasto’s battery manufacturing site in Germany.

Technically, the battery system is designed for high charging and discharging capacities. Mercedes-AMG uses an 800-Volt system with 2,660 cylindrical cells distributed across 18 modules. According to the manufacturer, the batteries feature an NCMA cathode made of nickel, cobalt, manganese, and aluminum, along with a silicon-based anode. AMG reports a gravimetric energy density of over 298 Wh/kg at the cell level. The battery management system, per Mercedes’ sports car subsidiary, is an in-house development.

A unique feature is direct cell cooling: an electrically non-conductive oil-based coolant flows around each individual round cell. Webasto must implement this concept, developed by Mercedes-AMG, in mass production. To achieve this, automated laser welding methods and AI-driven testing systems are used among other techniques. This direct temperature control is intended to ensure uniform cell temperatures, especially under repeated high-performance demands and during rapid charging.

"The highly automated industrialization for the new four-door AMG GT Coupé represents a significant step in our still young battery business history," says Marco van der Weerd, global head of Webasto’s battery division. "The battery system is designed for peak performance, and its complex product design places extremely high demands on manufacturing technology and quality." Webasto does not disclose any production capacity or volume figures for this order.

For the more powerful GT 55 and GT 63 models, Mercedes-AMG claims a maximum direct current (DC) charging capacity of over 600 kW with appropriate infrastructure. Under the conditions defined by the manufacturer, this should allow more than 460 kilometers of WLTP range to be added in ten minutes. Mercedes-AMG states that it takes eleven minutes to charge from 10% to 80%. The actual peak charging capacity depends on factors such as the charging station, battery temperature, and charge level. Equally capable public charging stations are not yet available everywhere.

The order connects two German production sites for the electric AMG powertrain. While Webasto manufactures the battery in Schierling, Mercedes-Benz has been producing axial-flux motors for the GT 4-door coupe since June 2026 in Berlin-Marienfelde. The GT 55 and GT 63 each feature three of these motors designed for particularly dynamic electric vehicles. Mercedes-AMG claims a power output of 600 kW/816 horsepower for the GT 55 and up to 860 kW/1169 horsepower with AMG Launch Control and the appropriate battery charge level for the GT 63. Meanwhile, the entry-level model GT 53 is now available with two permanent-magnet synchronous motors and a system power output of 400 kW/544 horsepower.
