Wallbox Chargers closes US plant – in favour of Spain

Spanish charging station manufacturer Wallbox Chargers is shutting down its production in the USA and relocating it to Barcelona. The measure only affects production and, according to the company, does not represent a withdrawal from the US market. The company now plans to supply North American customers from Barcelona.

The Supernova DC Charger has already been built in Spain for some time.

Wallbox Chargers established its US production at the beginning of the decade and launched the plant in Arlington, Texas, in autumn 2022. At its opening, the factory was designed for a capacity of 250,000 charging units per year. In a statement at the time of the plant’s commissioning, the Spanish company also announced its aim to reach a capacity of one million units by 2030.

Instead, Wallbox is now closing the factory and relocating production to its main plant in Barcelona. According to media reports, this move is taking place “as part of an operational reorientation following a restructuring of debts amounting to almost 170 million euros”. The background is the worsening financial situation at Wallbox Chargers.

As the Spanish portal _Ecotechers_ reports, citing company sources, production of DC chargers for the USA had already been carried out from Barcelona. A few months ago, the production of AC units for Canada was also centralised in Spain. Finally, the manufacturing of AC home chargers is now also being withdrawn from the USA.

Wallbox Chargers is particularly familiar to us because the Spanish company acquired the insolvent Franconian wallbox manufacturer ABL in 2023 (link in German). At the time, Wallbox Chargers purchased the majority of ABL’s operating assets for around €15 million euros.
