Wallbox: Installations up 273% in September, according to Motus-e on bonus timelines

Wallboxes are becoming increasingly common in Italian households. The figures for 2026 confirm this: in the first nine months, installation requests rose by 160.4% compared to 2025, but the strongest growth occurred in September, when the increase surged to 273.3%. Both the surge in eco-bonuses, with over 500 million invested in electric vehicles, and the impact of the charging station bonuses drove market growth. Even accounting for those who installed wallboxes before the June 26 decree and thus lost the subsidy, the effect of the announcement spread over several months, reaching its peak in September as requests started pouring in. On the topic of subsidy management, we spoke with Francesco Naso, general secretary of Motus‑E, especially since four more years of funding are planned to make support for home charging infrastructure permanent.

The most common power output is 7 kW, and it is mainly installed in apartment building garages.

According to data processed by ProntoPro, the characteristics of these charging units are also evident. In terms of power, 7 kW is the most commonly installed capacity, and apartment buildings are the most common installation location. Let’s look at the figures: private garages within apartment buildings account for 41.5% of requests, followed by private homes with garages or outdoor spaces, and further behind are courtyards, gardens, and apartment building parking lots.

We turn to power: the preferred option is the 7 kW wallbox, chosen in 58.7% of cases. How much does installation cost? The average national cost according to ProntoPro’s report is 959 euros. An important factor affecting the cost, in addition to the device’s specifications, is the distance from the electrical panel.

Excluded from the charging station subsidy: voices of protest

But where are installations concentrated? Rome leads, with 14.5% of national requests coming from the capital, compared to 10% in Milan. Many cities in northern Italy follow, with Monza and Brianza, Turin, Bologna, Brescia, Varese, Padua, and Verona among the most active provinces. Naples is the busiest city in the south for installing home wallboxes. Finally, the analysis showed that more and more electric vehicle owners are investing in solar panels alongside wallboxes.

The installations are positive, but the management of the charging station bonus has caused a lot of disappointment. Dozens of readers have written to us because they were excluded from the incentive due to installation before June 26, 2026, or for choosing a wallbox not on the list approved by GSE. On this topic, we sought the opinion of Motus-E through its general secretary, Francesco Naso.

"The bonus for wallboxes and home charging stations for electric vehicles is certainly a very useful measure. As Motus-E, we appreciate that it has been introduced again, as it supports the development of electric mobility at a time when high fuel costs represent a decisive factor for the sector’s transition. Along with the arrival of more and more entry-level models on the market, making home charging easier allows a greater number of drivers to take advantage of all the benefits of electric vehicles in terms of total cost of ownership."

The approved measure and initial figures confirm Italians’ interest. What about the problems? “It’s regrettable that the timelines were not able to meet the needs of many drivers who are undergoing a technological transition in mobility, with benefits not only for themselves but also for the entire community. It is hoped that in the future there can be better planning and coordination of incentives, both direct and indirect, as part of a broader strategy for decarbonizing mobility, which is also particularly useful for the country’s energy security.”
