VW’s new 20,000-euro electric car is reportedly called the ID. Up

VW is preparing the production version of the electric city car ID. Every1, introduced in 2025 (image from article). According to motor.es, the model name has now been confirmed as “ID. Up.” Volkswagen itself continues to refer only to it as the production version of ID. Every1 for now.

The technical role of the compact electric car is secured. As the first model from the company, it will feature a version of the new Software-Defined-Vehicle Architecture (SDV) developed by the joint venture Rivian and Volkswagen Group Technologies, or RV Tech for short. This partnership with the U.S. electric vehicle startup is creating a zonal electronics architecture along with the corresponding software. This setup aims to enable vehicle functions to be more closely controlled by central computers, allowing them to be updated or expanded more easily via over-the-air updates after purchase.

The development has now reached the testing phase. Volkswagen announced in March that RV Tech has completed several months of winter testing using reference vehicles from VW, Audi, and the revived American SUV brand Scout. Otherwise, VW relies on its proven modular electric drive system with front-wheel drive for this new electric city car.

The concept car shown last year is 3.88 meters long and is equipped with an electric motor producing 70 kW/95 horsepower. VW stated that the concept vehicle has a range of at least 250 kilometers and a top speed of 130 km/h. These figures specifically apply to the concept car. The manufacturer has not yet released any complete technical specifications for the production version. As with other electric vehicles from the brand, several versions with different power outputs and ranges are expected.

VW positions the new model as an electric entry point into its product lineup and has announced a price of around 20,000 euros for the production version. This makes the vehicle cheaper than the new ID. Polo, which is available for order starting at 24,995 euros. Reviving another former model name would fit the brand’s future naming strategy: VW began by using the compact ID. Polo to apply established model names with the “ID.” prefix to its electric vehicles.

For the production version of the ID. Every1, turning to the up! makes sense. This small car, originally developed as a pure internal combustion engine vehicle, was discontinued in 2023 along with its battery-electric variant, the e-up!. Previously, ID.1 was mentioned as a possible name for VW’s new entry-level electric car, but this is now considered unlikely.
