Volkswagen Nutzfahrzeuge (VWN) is developing a fully electric model in the California series. A concept vehicle based on the electric minibus ID. Buzz is set to be unveiled at the Caravan Salon at the end of August. No specific details have been released about the ID. California Cruise yet, but an image provides a first glimpse. The company also plans to introduce several electric campers.

The California is moving toward an electric future, the manufacturer announces. Based on the ID. Buzz, this concept brings “the freedom, flexibility, and everyday usability” of the California family into the era of electric mobility. With its world premiere, the ID. California Cruise marks an important milestone on the path “toward a whole generation of fully electric campervans.” These are set to be introduced gradually by 2028.

To date, there are only after-market solutions from specialized suppliers for the ID. Buzz. Just two years ago, it seemed likely that VWN might not offer an electric California camper until much later, or perhaps not at all. The high additional weight from interior fittings, along with multiple passengers and luggage, makes achieving a practical range challenging. However, battery technology has advanced, and VWN appears confident that it will be able to offer a compelling product in the future.

The all-electric ID. Buzz is available as a minibus starting at 52,270.75 euros. With its small 58-kWh battery, the E-Bulli can travel up to 359 kilometers according to WLTP standards. The battery pack with a 79 kWh storage capacity is likely more suitable for the upcoming camping version. With this larger energy storage, up to 498 kilometers per charge are officially possible. Additionally, an optional 86-kWh battery is available for the four-wheel-drive version of the ID. Buzz, enabling a range of 476 kilometers.

VWN already offers the California as a fully electric model for ordering, based on the current VW T7 Multivan. The plug-in hybrid version starts at 78,242.50 euros, while the conventional model costs at least 66,086.65 euros. As a part-time electric vehicle, the California model can travel up to 90 kilometers purely on electricity. For longer distances, in addition to a battery that can be charged externally and an 110-kW electric motor (136 hp), it is equipped with a 1.5-liter gasoline engine producing 130 kW/177 hp.
