Will the ID3 Neo's competitive pricing and plenty of standard kit be enough to shake off its predecessor's dowdy image, though?

Volkswagen has confirmed that pricing for its ID3 Neo will start from £31,580 when order books open on Thursday, August 13.

The ID3 Neo is a heavily revised version of Wolfsburg’s unloved ID 3 C-segment hatchback, which failed to win over VW’s traditional customer base. This was largely due to its anamorphic aesthetic and, despite a late-life facelift, a non-intuitive, haptic-dominated interior. Once on sale, each version of the ID3 Neo will qualify for the UK Government’s £1,500 Electric Car Grant (ECG).

Volkswagen is offering the ID3 Neo with three battery options: a 50kWh unit, a 58kWh unit, and a 79kWh unit. The two smaller packs use new lithium-ion phosphate (LFP) chemistry. Meanwhile, the largest of the three uses a nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) composition, which, while more expensive to produce, offers better energy density and performance in extreme temperatures.

All versions of the ID3 Neo are rear-wheel-drive (RWD) thanks to the electric motor on the rear axle. However, power outputs vary depending on trim level and battery size.

With the £1,500 applied, pricing for the base-spec 50kWh ID 3 Neo starts at £31,850 and has a 258-mile range. When it comes to performance, this cheapest model has 168bhp, resulting in a 0-62mph time of 8.6 seconds.

The 58kWh car can travel 306 miles on a single charge, and with 187bhp, it achieves the 0-62mph run in eight seconds. Sitting at the top of the ID3 Neo range is the 79kWh battery model. As well as a significantly bigger 390-mile range, the range-topper has a power output of 228bhp and can manage 0-62mph in 7.1 seconds.

It is worth noting that the 50kWh ID3 Neo has a maximum charge rate of 100kW, while the 58kWh version has a slightly higher rate of 105kW – both take around 25 minutes to top up from 10%-80%. The 79kWh maximum charging rate is 183kWh, meaning the same charging period takes 29 minutes.

Volkswagen has reorganised the ID3 Neo’s trim structure into two levels: Life and Style. The Life is available with all three battery sizes, priced at £31,580, £33,995, and £35,495 from smallest to largest. Meanwhile, the Style comes with just the 58kWh and 70kWh options. They are priced at £37,000 and £38,500 respectively.

When it comes to standard equipment, the practicality-centric Life gets 18-inch ‘Edinburgh’ alloy wheels, dual-zone climate control, keyless start/stop functionality, adaptive cruise control, and driver profile selection. Parking sensors front and rear, a reverse parking camera, and high-beam assist are also part of the package.

There are two USB-C ports in the front, two in the rear, plus a 12.0-inch infotainment screen placed in the centre of the dash. Wireless mobile device charging, along with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, is also included with the price.

The more design-focused ID3 Neo Style builds on the Life’s toys and visually improves things as much as possible. It rides on 19-inch ‘Wellington’ alloy wheels, comes with a front light bar featuring a centrally positioned VW logo, plus rear LED tail lights and dynamic indicators.

Volkswagen also includes a heat pump to eke out precious extra miles during winter, along with keyless entry/ go, heated ‘Sports comfort’ front seats, and ‘ArtVelours’ upholstery throughout the cabin.

Additional comforts include a heated steering wheel, tinted privacy glass, interior ambient lighting, and accelerator and brake pedals finished with ‘play’ and ‘pause’ emblems.

A launch edition, unsurprisingly dubbed the Volkswagen ID 3 Neo Style launch edition, is available from £38,250. Once again, it takes the equipment levels up a notch courtesy of a 360-degree camera system, a driver’s head-up display, electric massaging seats, semi-autonomous driving, and a panoramic glass sunroof.
