Volkswagen has confirmed a release date of October 2026 for the ID Tiguan, the fourth model in its heavily revised line of all-electric ID cars.

An exact date in October has yet to be confirmed, but the ID Tiguan will borrow its name from VW’s best-selling C-segment model, which has sold over 8.3 million units globally following its introduction in 2007.

When it goes on sale in early 2027, the ID Tiguan will replace the ID 4 SUV and the ID 5 fastback coupé. After their introduction in 2020, the Volkswagen ID 4 and ID 5 were initially met with a mixed reception.

Nonetheless, a series of gradual updates to the car’s software and various design changes transformed the ID 4 and ID 5 into popular models, with 950,000 units sold worldwide.

VW hopes that the “strength and trust associated” with the Tiguan name will help take its new vehicle to new heights and introduce it to a broader audience.

The ID subbrand was introduced in 2020 with the ID 3 hatchback as VW sought to rehabilitate its image after its involvement in the Dieselgate scandal.

While VW currently offers a range of hybrid and plug-in hybrid models alongside its ID cars, Volkswagen initially set out to become an electric-only brand by 2033 with the introduction of the ID range. Market fluctuations and customer demand forced Wolfsburg to set this deadline back to 2035.

The ID line-up underwent a significant revision towards the end of 2025 as VW sought to regain lost ground to a number of rivals. These included several Chinese newcomers such as BYD, Zeekr, and Xpeng, which undercut the German carmaker on price, quality, and tech.

In addition to the ID Tiguan, the new ID line of electric Volkswagens is made up of the ID 3 Neo, the ID Cross, and the ID Polo; the latter has been available to order from July 2026 in the UK, and deliveries for the electric-only supermini will begin in November this year.

There are very few design details surrounding the VW ID Tiguan, but the camouflaged car currently doing the rounds adopts a more mature appearance than the ID 4 and ID 5. It also appears to incorporate a similar front end to the ID Polo and ID 3 Neo. Whether a coupé fastback body style will be offered remains unknown.
