VW ID. Golf production halted. It could be a trick. Or a sign that the SSP platform will be replaced with a “Made in China” version [speculations]

In summary for the third quarter of 2026, Volkswagen’s chief financial officer and those in charge of the Group’s key brands, David Powels, stated that the company is “temporarily suspending development work on the upcoming ID. Golf model.” Development will not continue until the company “can secure the necessary investments.” In other words, until it has the funds to develop a completely new product. After all, the Volkswagen ID. Golf was supposed to be the first model based on the SSP platform.

Will there be no SSP platform? Will MEB stay with us longer? Will ChinaMP (CMP) replace it?

Will the Volkswagen ID. Golf be created by engineers from China?

The one-sentence mention of the VW ID. Golf was softened with the word “temporarily,” making it sound less definitive, but in reality it represents a massive shift in strategy. The Volkswagen ID. Golf was intended to save the parent factory in Wolfsburg, Germany, which is shifting the production of its gasoline-powered Golf to Mexico. It was also meant to pave the way, as it would be built on Volkswagen Group’s unified SSP platform, combining the advantages of Volkswagen’s MEB platform (low cost) with Audi’s PPE platform (advanced technology).

The work on the VW ID. Golf currently focuses primarily on the SSP (Scalable Systems Platform) platform, which has been delayed for years. After all, the “ID. Golf” label could be applied to any model that resembles a Golf, such as the VW ID. Neo 2. While this might cause slight dissatisfaction among journalists, it is unlikely to have a significant impact on customers — especially if the ID. Golf were built on the PPE platform [editorial speculation from Elektrowozu]. In our view, Powels was mainly conveying that Volkswagen is delaying the development of the SSP platform.

Volkswagen’s plans for electronic-software platforms from 2021. Note the intended release date for SSP (c) Volkswagen Group

Will the Volkswagen ID. Golf be the work of engineers from China?

It seems the company has once again painfully realized that the core component of SSP, the new software-electronic architecture (E3 2.0), is already falling behind competitors, even though it is not due to be launched for several years. A lack of expertise in hardware-software development was evident in Volkswagen Group, with MEB (an entire generation focused on fixing flaws), and with PPE (the Porsche Macan delayed by two years, despite being “ready”). The current pause in development will start to cause anxiety among shareholders, who will one day say, “Well, do something already—show us an electric version of the Golf!”

At that time, Volkswagen will be able to leverage the Vega project. This encompasses a range of solutions developed at the research and development center in Hefei, China, including the ChinaMP (CMP) platform, its own computer for level 2 driverless driving (HyperSense 8), and its own C7H chip for level 2.5 semi-autonomous driving and level 3 and 4 autonomous driving according to SAE standards. There is also an electronic-electrical architecture compatible with these solutions, created based on Xpeng’s systems.

In short: the VW ID. Golf will return, rising like a phoenix from the ashes, technologically advanced thanks to solutions from China. Europe will only add its distinctive body design to it.
