Volvo announced that its three flagship models, the Volvo EX60, Volvo EX90, and Volvo ES90, will be able to share information about potential road hazards to warn other drivers of dangers. The cars are designed to detect large animals, pedestrians, cyclists, as well as road construction equipment and accidents. All of this is part of the Connected Safety technology. Currently, cars can only detect vehicles with hazard lights and slippery roads.

Tesla, whose cars shared information about road holes with each other, Volkswagen with its mysterious “swarm data” allegedly used to support the Travel Assist autopilot, and Volvo with its advanced Connected Safety are all examples. Volvo’s software detects dangerous situations on the road, sends this data to the manufacturer’s servers, where it is then accessed by other cars in the vicinity. For now, this feature is available only on the Volvo EX60, EX90, and ES90, the brand’s most expensive and latest models.

The warning function detects potential obstacles (animals, pedestrians, road construction equipment, accidents) on and around the road. The Connected Safety package—without the advanced features mentioned above—is available in over 1 million vehicles on the roads, while the new features are currently available only to a small group of around several tens of thousands of EX90, ES90, and EX60 units sold. Interestingly, the data is collected by Volvo cars but can also be retrieved from or sent to safety centers operating under Data for Road Safety, allowing other brand vehicles or navigation providers (such as Google Maps) to use it as well.

In addition to the information on Volvo’s new safety features, the company also revealed that the EX90 and ES90 models equipped with Bowers & Wilkins audio systems will receive an update that enables support for Spatial Audio in Apple CarPlay. This system is responsible for arranging sounds in space so they sound more… three-dimensional. A relatively new iPhone and audio tracks compatible with Dolby Atmos are required, including some available through Apple Music.

Unfortunately, this new feature is not available in the Volvo EX60, although plans to introduce it in the future were mentioned during the car’s launch.
