Volvo EX50: The Swedish brand’s major 2027 release will be an SUV cheaper than the EX60, but with all its technology

The Volvo EX60 was the first vehicle to feature the new SPA3 platform, a next-generation architecture that, according to the Swedish brand, will accelerate the development of its future electric cars. It is expected that the rest of the model range will gradually adopt this platform as well (the EX40 and EC40 are based on the CMA platform, the EX30 on the SEA platform, and the ES90 and EX90 on the SPA2 platform).

Following the successful debut of the EX60, Volvo plans to launch a second electric car based on the SPA3 platform next year. This vehicle will be more affordable and targeted at a broader market segment. All indications point to it being the rumored EX50, a compact SUV (segment C) designed to replace the EX40.

Designed specifically for the European market, this model will be a direct competitor to the Audi Q4 e-tron, BMW iX1, and Mercedes-Benz GLA. While the Audi already has several years of market presence behind it, the BMW and Mercedes-Benz models use multi-energy platforms; therefore, it is highly likely that the Volvo will have a significant technological advantage thanks to its advanced dedicated platform.

The EX50 will coexist with the XC40 for an indefinite period, as the XC40 was recently updated to remain on the market for a few more years. Additionally, it is not ruled out that Volvo may develop sedans and SUVs based on the SPA3 platform in the future; however, for now, SUVs are the priority due to their higher sales volume in Europe.

The Volvo EX50 Will Be Manufactured in Slovakia

Preliminary reports suggest it will be launched in the fall of 2027. Production will take place at the company’s new plant in Slovakia. Of course, it will be a software-defined vehicle capable of wireless updates. Its infotainment system will be based on the Android Automotive OS, allowing users access to Google’s ecosystem.

Volvo is preparing one of the most ambitious product launches in its history for the coming years: by 2030, the Swedish brand will introduce a total of thirteen new models, all of them electric (hybrids and 100% electric). Seven of these will be targeted at Western countries and will be based on the aforementioned SPA2 and SPA3 platforms.

Volvo makes its cheapest electric SUV more affordable: the EX30 gets new entry-level versions

"The challenges facing the automotive industry are immense, but our strategy provides a clear roadmap on how we will adapt to them, with our ambition being to become the leading premium car brand," said Håkan Samuelsson, President and CEO of Volvo Cars, a few weeks ago. "With a regionally optimized product portfolio, unique synergies, electrification, and new levels of efficiency, we will build a company capable of achieving EBIT margins above 8%."
