Volvo is planning a new all-electric model aimed at capturing a larger and more affordable market segment in Europe. As the Swedish manufacturer announced in October as part of its quarterly results, the first customer vehicles are set to be delivered after summer 2027. Industry reports link this vehicle, which has not yet been officially named, to the EX50.

In August, media outlets reported, citing sources familiar with product planning, about a possible EX50. According to these reports, the new electric SUV is set to be longer and taller than the current EX40 and will be available in the U.S. starting in fall 2027. A lower starting price than the EX40 was also mentioned. As of now, there is no official confirmation regarding the model name, dimensions, or future selling prices.

Technically, Volvo has confirmed that the new electric vehicle will be based on the SPA3 platform, which is already used in the new premium mid-size SUV EX60. This architecture, developed specifically for electric vehicles, is intended to enable more flexible vehicle development and lower production costs.

Volvo uses an 800-volt electric architecture and integrating battery cells into the vehicle’s body structure among other features in the EX60. It has not yet been specified which of these technical solutions will be adopted by the upcoming model, and details regarding battery size, range, and charging speed are also missing.

In the European market, the new electric vehicle is intended to target a lower-priced segment. Within the model lineup, an EX50 positioned at this price point would offer an additional option below the mid-size SUV EX60. Media reports also suggest that the EX50 might replace the EX40 at least in the U.S. market. No such model replacement has been announced for Europe, as the EX40 was revised again in 2026.

The new electric vehicle is part of Volvo’s extensive product rollout, which plans to introduce a total of 13 new vehicles by the end of 2030. By 2027, the Swedish premium manufacturer aims to launch three models, including a new vehicle for Europe and two models developed specifically for China.

Volvo explicitly links this new generation of models to the goal of reducing production costs and improving the profitability of its electric vehicle business. The SPA3 architecture serves as the technical foundation for future vehicles across various price segments. Prices for the model announced for 2027 have not yet been released. Nor are the exact launch date, final design, or technical specifications officially known at this time.
