Volvo EX40: New model year with a range of up to 576 km

Volvo has updated its electric EX40: new matrix LED headlights, a new sensor platform with enhanced assistance systems, and an 11.2-inch display powered by Google Gemini. The range reaches up to 576 km, with prices starting at 47,490 euros.

Volvo has revised the all-electric EX40 for the new model year. The changes include updates to the exterior and interior design, infotainment systems, as well as driver assistance and safety features built on a new software and sensor platform. According to the manufacturer, orders are now available in selected markets, with production set to begin this fall.

Updated Exterior Design

The most noticeable change on the front is the “Thor’s Hammer” headlights, which Volvo presents in a revised version of its iconic lighting design, now equipped with matrix LED technology. The radiator grille, front bumper, hood, and front fenders have also been updated. Volvo describes this as a new interpretation of the Scandinavian design language.

At the rear, new LED taillights, a redesigned trunk lid, and a reconfigured bumper are featured. In addition to the regular trims, the EX40 is also available as a Black Edition.

New sensor platform and assistance systems

The foundation for the enhanced assistance features is a new software and sensor platform. It includes radar sensors at the front, rear, and corners of the vehicle, a new front camera, twelve new ultrasonic sensors, as well as new parking cameras. According to Volvo, this enables the vehicle to perceive its surroundings more comprehensively than before.

The features include an automatic lane-keeping assistant designed to avoid obstacles, as well as an automatic emergency braking assistant. New is the Door Opening Alert, which warns passengers not to open the doors when cyclists or vehicles are approaching from behind. The optionally available Pilot Assist System has been enhanced with a lane-change assistant to help maintain the driving lane more smoothly. The also optional 360-degree camera now offers a 3D view as well, intended to make parking and maneuvering at low speeds easier.

Display

Larger screen and Google Gemini

The interior features an 11.2-inch screen with a higher resolution than before. Volvo claims that fewer steps are required to access core functions. Google Gemini serves as the voice assistant, intended to assist with things like trip planning, finding stops, and managing messages. The availability of these functions and services may vary by market and subscription plan.

The wireless charger for smartphones has also been revised. Options include ambient lighting along with optional decorations in “Black Ash” or aluminum. Software and functions can be updated after delivery via over-the-air updates.

Powertrain and Range

The EX40 is available in three powertrain options: the P5 electric with 175 kW (238 hp), the P5 Long Range electric with 185 kW (252 hp), and the P8 Performance AWD with 325 kW (442 hp). Volvo claims a maximum range of up to 576 kilometers per battery charge, with combined electricity consumption under WLTP standards ranging from 19.4 to 16.6 kWh/100 km.

According to the manufacturer, these range figures are preliminary and were determined under specific WLTP test conditions; in reality, the actual range depends on factors such as vehicle specifications, outside and battery temperature, terrain, and driving style. Volvo does not provide details regarding battery capacity or charging speed in the announcement.

Prices

The EX40 in the Essential version costs at least 47,490 euros, with the Ultra Black Edition featuring a P8 drive priced at 65,390 euros. The entry-level Essential version and the Core line cannot be combined with all drive systems. All prices are listed as MSRP including 19 percent VAT.
