Volvo EX40 and EC40: A refresh for the two Swedish electric SUVs, here’s what’s changed

Volvo is offering a major update to its EX40 and EC40 models. Without changing generations, both vehicles feature a revised design, a new 11.2-inch central screen, Google Gemini integration, and an upgraded suite of sensors. Pre-orders are already open in France.

The EX40 and EC40 have been on the market for a few years now. The former is based on the XC40, which was introduced in 2017, while the latter, previously known as the C40 Recharge, arrived a few years later. Rather than replacing them, Volvo has chosen to extend their lifespans with a substantial update.

A new look and a larger screen

The changes are first visible on the outside. The EX40 features a new Matrix LED lighting signature inspired by the traditional “Thor’s hammer,” along with redesigned grilles, hoods, fenders, and bumpers. The rear also sees updates with new headlights and a modified trunk lid. In contrast, the EC40 retains more of its current design in this area.

Inside, the most noticeable change is the central touchscreen. Its diagonal size increases to 11.2 inches, and Volvo promises a faster interface with simplified access to the most frequently used functions. Another notable update is the introduction of Gemini, Google’s artificial intelligence. This technology is designed to enable more natural voice commands for planning routes, searching for destinations, or managing messages.

New Features for the EX40 and EC40

Volvo primarily uses this update to improve its driving assistance features. The EX40 and EC40 receive new front, side, and rear radars, a new front camera, twelve ultrasonic sensors, as well as new cameras dedicated to parking. This upgrade introduces a door opening alert system designed to warn occupants when a cyclist or another road user is approaching.

The optional Pilot Assist also gains lane change assistance, while the 360-degree camera can now provide a 3D view.

No major under-the-hood changes

In terms of range, there’s no revolution. Volvo claims up to 575 km WLTP for the EX40 and 584 km for the EC40, figures that are practically identical to those of the previous versions. So this update focuses mainly on design, onboard technologies, and driving aids. But that’s already quite impressive!

As for prices, the EX40 now starts at 46,950 € (with the smaller battery), while the EC40 costs 53,450 €. These new versions are available for order in France now, with production set to begin in the fall of 2026.
