Volkswagen will have a rival to the Land Rover Defender: here’s the Scout Traveler

Volkswagen Group is finalizing the introduction of the Scout brand to the U.S. market. Its first two models, the SUV Traveler and the pickup Terra, are scheduled to begin deliveries in 2028. Production will take place at a new facility located in Blythewood, South Carolina. The company is currently starting to test and validate the first prototypes.

The original Scout was an SUV manufactured by International Harvester from 1961 to 1980. Now, Volkswagen has revived that name and used it to designate a new off-road-focused brand. “Scout Motors was created to design the next generation of rugged pickups and SUVs, inspired by the same tradition that made the original Scout an American icon,” the company states.

Both the Traveler and the Terra will be built on a frame with rails and struts, and will come in 100% electric versions as well as those with extended range. Their electrical system will operate at 800 volts, allowing them to charge at 350 kW. The BEV variants will have an EPA range of around 350 miles (563 km), while the EREV (Harvester) version will achieve 500 miles (805 km) of range.

Four-wheel drive will be standard. Their ground clearance will be around 3 feet (91 cm), with a ride height of over 1 foot (30 cm). Additionally, they will feature a detachable front stabilizer bar, a rigid rear axle, and mechanical locks in both the front and rear. The Traveler will offer a towing capacity of 3,175 kg, while the Terra will reach 4,536 kg. The Terra can also carry up to 907 kg on its cargo platform.

Scout unveils two new prototypes based on the Traveler

To generate interest ahead of its launch, Scout has presented two concept cars based on the Traveler: the luxurious Traveler Mountainside, and a prototype designed specifically for off-road driving. The first features amenities such as a panoramic roof or 22-inch anodized tires, while the interior uses semi-aniline leather and walnut inserts.

The other model features a winch, tow hitch, tailgate with additional lights, 18-inch tires with all-terrain tread, an external spare tire holder with an integrated fuel tank... In this case, the interior is inspired by American workwear, using red brick leather and denim fabric.
