Volkswagen is preparing the ID. Up at 20 thousand euros. It is the electric successor to the e-Up.
Volkswagen is reportedly set to choose the name ID. Up for its smallest electric vehicle, which is scheduled to hit the market in autumn 2027 at a starting price of around 20,000 euros. This marks a move away from the working name ID.1 and simultaneously a return to a familiar name following the withdrawal of the e-Up in 2023.
For drivers, it’s simple: VW wants to sell this small BEV not as just another number in the ID series, but as a model that already conveys something meaningful. However, the car’s name alone doesn’t solve anything yet.
ID. Up instead of ID.1, with ID. Polo already available alongside it
The shift in direction was evident earlier on. About a year ago, Volkswagen announced it would move away from using pure numbers for its electric vehicles. That’s why the car priced at 25,000 euros will enter the market not as ID.2 but as ID. Polo. Its global debut took place in April, while the German dealer launch is set for September 4–6 under the banner “ID. Polo Days.”
A similar move is now expected for a cheaper urban model. The Spanish site Motor.es claims Volkswagen has already chosen the name ID. Up for the car, which was shown as a future ID.1 during the ID. EVERY1 concept presentation in March 2025.
This actually makes sense. “Up” still carries some meaning, while “ID.1” sounds like a temporary Excel file name.
Production in Portugal with dimensions between the e-Up and ID. Polo
The new model is set to be produced starting in mid-2027 at VW’s plant in Palmela, Portugal. A market launch is planned for fall 2027. If the specifications from the concept hold, the car will be 3.88 meters long and 1.81 meters wide.
This places it exactly between the old e-Up with a length of 3.60 meters and the new ID. Polo at 4.05 meters in length. In other words, it remains in the small urban car segment, but clearly larger than the former electric Up.
The idea behind the name isn’t new. The e-Up was Volkswagen’s first battery-powered urban car and was removed from the lineup in autumn 2023. According to the same sources, the company also considered the name ID. Lupo, meaning a return to the Lupo model produced from 1998 to 2005. Apparently, Up won in the end. rightfully so.
It also reveals a broader plan to reorganize the model lineup. Since there’s already the ID. Polo and now the ID. Up, other numbers might disappear as well. Scenarios like the ID.3 becoming the ID. Golf and the ID.7 becoming the ID. Passat have surfaced. There are even photos online of a disguised ID. Tiguana, which is said to replace the current ID.4 and ID.5.
An interesting detail from the leak is that the name isn’t supposed to come from Volkswagen’s official announcement, but rather from an accidental mention in a IG Metall union statement about production assignments in Emden. Classic of this sort.
The price of 20,000 euros, which is around 86,000–87,000 zł today, seems good on paper, but the usual test of reality will still apply when it comes to Poland’s pricing in 2027. What do you think — is ID. Up a better name for this car or ID.1?
