Volkswagen sells compact cars for 140,000–150,000–170,000 zł, and the family-oriented VW ID.4 with the same range for 130,000 zł. What’s the deal?

One of our readers brought to our attention a certain phenomenon within the Volkswagen group. The Volkswagen brand has introduced the VW ID. Polo, which with a 55 (51.5) kWh battery costs 154,290 or even 170,890 zlotys. The base price of the Skoda Epiq with a 55 (51.5) kWh battery in current offers is 139,600 zlotys. Meanwhile, the Volkswagen ID.4, a car in a larger segment (full-size C-SUV), is available starting at 127,490 zlotys. Why buy expensive and underpowered small cars when you can get a larger vehicle for less?
The exorbitant prices of the Skoda Epiq and VW ID. Polo versus normal prices
Once again: Volkswagen’s small electric cars (segment B/B-SUV), which are cost-optimized and meant to be inexpensive above all, are available for pre-order at 140,000–150,000+ Polish zlotys. That’s about 40–50 percent more than their diesel competitors (Toyota Yaris Cross Hybrid, VW T-Cross, VW Taigo). We understand the concept of pre-orders as a way to gauge interest in a model, but we don’t fully grasp the strategy of driving away potential customers with prices typical of higher segments.

The Volkswagen ID.4, a vehicle 4.58 meters long but still agile thanks to rear-wheel drive, with a trunk capacity of 543 liters (over 100 liters more than the Skoda Epiq), costs 127,490 złoty in the Pure version. The Pure Plus variant costs 131,890 złoty (price list HERE). It comes equipped with a 140 kW/190 HP engine and a battery with a capacity of 62 (58) kWh, allowing around 430 WLTP miles per charge (ID. Polo: up to 452 miles, Skoda Epiq: up to 440 miles on the smallest wheels).

The Pure Plus version already comes with 19-inch aluminum wheels, keyless entry along with a key via app, a rear camera and parking sensors, LED headlights and taillights, seats covered in comfortable microfiber, adaptive cruise control, and an inductive phone charger. Heated seats and steering wheel cost only 2,000 zlotys, while the projection display (HUD) and Harman Kardon audio system require an additional 7,840 zlotys as part of the Infotainment Plus package.

If the Volkswagen ID.4 seems too conventional for us, there’s also the VW ID.5 in coupe body style available starting at 133,190 złotys (Pure; price list HERE). If we’re interested in a sedan two segments larger, the equivalent of the Volkswagen Passat, then the VW ID.7 offers better range despite a similar battery and costs from 157,890 złotys (price list HERE). And if we need a car more spacious than the VW ID. Polo, which would be more convenient in city driving due to its smaller turning radius, the VW ID.3 Neo costs from 152,990 złotys (price list HERE).
Downsides? A smaller trunk and weaker range with a battery of ~52 (50) kWh. For better range, one must opt for the more equipped Life version, which raises the price to 169,890 złotys.
