Volkswagen is preparing to issue a recall of several ID. all-electric models over fears that their batteries may pose a fire risk.

The German brand has issued a warning to owners of certain ID.3, ID.4, ID.7 and ID.Buzz models telling them not to charge their vehicle beyond 80%.

The issue also affects some Cupra Born cars, which share their underpinnings with the ID.3.

In a statement, Volkswagen said that the issue was related to the 93MF and 93MF high-voltage batteries from a “specific supplier” produced between 2022 and 2025.

It revealed that in faulty units, when the battery was charged to more than 80% there was a risk of overheating, which in turn poses a fire risk.

Owners will receive a recall notice from VW or Cupra “in due course” but there is no indication of how long the process will take.

In the meantime, VW and Cupra are pushing out over-the-air updates which will automatically limit charging in most affected vehicles to 80%.

It is understood that around 5,000 UK cars are affected, with around 85,000 cars worldwide subject to the notice.

So far in the UK, only Volkswagen and Cupra have issued warnings. In other markets, the Audi Q4 e-tron, which is mechanically related to the ID.4, has also been recalled.

No Skoda models are currently subject to the warning or pending recall.

The Volkswagen Group is the latest manufacturer to suffer issues around battery safety. Earlier this year Volvo recalled more than 44,000 EX30s worldwide amid similar fire fears, while in 2024 Mini issued a recall on its first-generation Mini Electric for similar reasons.
