Win-win for power grids and electric trucks

A new pricing model makes it more cost-effective to charge heavy vehicles at night. The electric vehicle association welcomes the move, hoping other utilities will follow Glitre’s example.

Glitre Nett is Norway’s second-largest utility provider, responsible for most of the electricity supply in Agder, Buskerud, and parts of Østfold and Akershus, as well as in Hadeland and Askøy.
Now they are introducing a change that makes night charging for electric trucks significantly cheaper.
Half price for night charging
The main principle behind the new tariff is simple, states Glitre Nett in a press release.
The electricity price is reduced by 50 percent at night, while it increases accordingly for charging during the day.
– This provides a clear economic incentive to shift as much consumption as possible to nighttime. The tariff applies to customers with an annual electricity consumption of over 100,000 kilowatt-hours. For businesses that can shift much of their consumption to nighttime, the new tariff can offer significant savings while making better use of existing grid capacity, says Jan Myrslo-Kønig, the tariff specialist at Glitre Nett.
This measure was praised by industry expert Sveinung Kvalø from Elbilforeningen:
– This makes it more profitable for companies to electrify their trucks, and it will help accelerate the adoption of zero-emission vehicles significantly, he says.

The new prism model comes after collaboration with several stakeholders, where Elbilforeningen worked together with Grønt Landtransportprogram (GLP), Norges Lastebileierforbund, Drivkraft Norge, Zero, Bilimportørenes Landsforening, Osloregionen, and Virke og Glitre Nett.
Hoping More Will Follow Glitre’s Example
Kvalø from Elbilforeningen hopes that more stakeholders will follow Glitre’s lead:
– Elvia and other internet companies would also benefit from adopting a similar model. We expect a quick response from the market.
The new prism model is currently most relevant for businesses that have charging facilities on their own premises or in parking lots.
Kvalø believes this has greater potential going forward:
- This could also be profitable for charging companies that offer battery swapping, he says, and continues:
A professional vehicle magazine reported last summer on CATL, which plans to build battery swap stations for trucks in Europe.
The Prism model is not limited to the transportation sector and will also apply to other entities that primarily use electricity at night.
Night charging is a sensible way to use electricity
“Glitre has found a smart way to utilize the idle capacity in the power grid, while also recognizing that charging at night is beneficial for the grid,” says Kvalø.
The power grid is designed for the coldest day of the year, when we use the most electricity that day.
This means that as a rule, there is plenty of idle capacity in the grid, especially at night.
– While many have been concerned that charging electric vehicles will put extra strain on the power grid, the Electric Vehicle Association has argued for years that electric vehicle charging can actually be a resource for the grid, Kvalø concludes.
