Four million euros for electric mobility: Austria launches new subsidy program

In Austria, the “Zero Emission Mobility plus 2026” funding program launches with a budget of four million euros to accelerate the adoption of electric mobility. The focus is on four key areas: zero-emission vehicles and charging technology, as well as targeted installation of wall chargers in existing residential buildings.

The Austrian Federal Ministry for Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure (BMIMI) has launched the “Zero Emission Mobility plus 2026” funding program under the umbrella brand and initiative “eMove Austria” to promote the development of zero-emission mobility, allocating four million euros for this purpose. The program is funded by the Austrian federal government’s Climate and Energy Fund and aims to help industry and research bring promising developments from the laboratory to roads more quickly.
The initiative by the Federal Ministry focuses on transforming mobility as an economic driver and aims to support projects that can be tested in practice. Bernd Vogl, managing director of the Climate and Energy Fund, explains: “Through our program, we want to make solutions for an affordable, modern, and efficient mobility system possible. It is crucial to combine research with practical application so that innovative technologies can be implemented promptly and create value in Austria.”
Transport Minister Peter Hanke sees great potential for opportunities: “Zero-emission technologies are economically important for Austria. As one of the nine key areas of the Austria 2035 Industry Strategy, mobility technologies make a significant contribution to strengthening our industrial innovation capacity, domestic value creation, and international competitiveness. Especially in the field of electric mobility, which we support through eMove Austria, there are export opportunities for Austrian companies and the country as a whole. With Zero Emission Mobility plus, together with the Climate and Energy Fund, we are supporting innovations and strengthening Austria’s position in international value chains.”
Four focus areas for tenders
Funding should not only go to conventional electric vehicles; rather, the areas supported fall into four main categories:
The first focus area, “Zero Emission Vehicles,” emphasizes the development of locally emission-free vehicles, ranging from passenger cars and buses to delivery trucks as well as specialized vehicles for construction and logistics. The choice of propulsion system is left up to the applicants. Battery-electric drives, fuel cells, and hydrogen engines are all eligible for funding.
The second focus area, “Zero Emission Infrastructure,” covers the expansion of fueling and charging infrastructure, including fast-charging systems, hydrogen refueling stations, and intelligent grid connections.
The third focus area, “Integrated Systemic Solutions for Vehicles and Infrastructure,” connects vehicles and infrastructure into overall systems, such as in conjunction with sharing models or public transportation.
The fourth focus area, “Charging Infrastructure in Existing Residential Buildings,” addresses the technical, legal, and organizational challenges associated with installing charging infrastructure in existing residential buildings and apartment complexes.
Funding Amounts and Requirements
For research and development projects, up to 1.5 million euros are available per project for a maximum duration of three years. The funding rate can reach up to 85 percent depending on the project type and organization. The special focus area for residential construction is offered as a service and fully funded up to 100,000 euros.
Applications can now be submitted digitally through the eCall portal of the Austrian Research Promotion Society (FFG) starting today and until 12:00 PM on February 10, 2027. If the project plans to build large testing facilities, the handling office requires a mandatory consultation session by no later than January 13, 2027.
