Vattenfall: Subsidizing fuels is a waste of money. Supporting electric cars is a better option.

The Swedish energy company Vattenfall claims that EU countries are wasting money by subsidizing the fossil fuel sector. Instead, they could focus on Europe’s energy independence and support the electric vehicle market by expanding charging infrastructure. In Poland alone, the costs of the CPN (“Lower Fuel Prices”) package due to lost excise taxes amounted to about 1.1 billion zlotys from March 30 to May 15, 2026. For comparison, the cost of subsidies for electric cars under the NaszEauto program is 1.18 billion zlotys.

Instead of lowering prices today, we should think about the future

In Spain, the total cost of subsidies for fossil fuels from late March to June amounted to 1.055 billion euros, equivalent to 4.5 billion zlotys, according to FUNCAS cited by the ForoCohesElectricos website. This is more than 2.5 times higher than the planned budget for electric vehicle subsidies that has not yet been activated. In comparison, Poland is not as extravagant; both amounts there (a few weeks of cheaper fuel versus a year of subsidies) are similar.

Zurawski estimates that for 1.6 billion euros, Vattenfall could deploy 10,000 fast charging stations with 20,000 charging points. This would allow more people to realize the benefits of switching to electric vehicles. Alternatively, rather than reducing fuel taxes, the government could lower taxes on electricity to promote BEVs. In the long term, this would help increase the energy independence of the country and the entire European continent.

In light of the current chaos in the Strait of Hormuz and the war in Ukraine, it’s clear that even countries rich in fossil fuels can face difficulties with them.
