USA: Tesla launches V2L adapter for the Model Y Premium

Tesla has launched a new Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) adapter in the United States. The accessory, available from the Tesla Shop for around $80 USD, is initially intended for Model Y Premium models - meaning the basic variants are not included for the time being.
V2L is a basic bidirectional charging function that is becoming increasingly common in more and more models, and allows external devices to be powered using electricity from the drive battery. In the US, Tesla has so far only offered this feature on its top-of-the-range Model Y Performance and the Cybertruck. However, Tesla is now extending the function to Model Y variants with the ‘Premium’ suffix. The adapter required for this costs $80 in the Tesla Shop and works in conjunction with a so-called Gen 3 Mobile Connector. The adapter is plugged into the main housing of the Mobile Connector, providing a standard US 120 V domestic socket with a 20-ampere rating and 2.4 kilowatts.
In the Tesla Shop, the adapter is listed as compatible with the Cybertruck and with the Model Y Performance and Premium variants. As Teslarati reports, however, that the adapter does not work with older Model Ys. This means that owners of first-generation Model Ys (prior to the launch of the Juniper series) are generally left out. According to Teslarati, anyone who bought a Model Y before Tesla renamed the trim levels ‘Premium’ and ‘Standard’ also appears to be unable to use the adapter. This was the case in October 2025.
Outside the US, Tesla launched a V2L adapter in China last year. In Europe, the introduction of a factory-fitted V2L function is still pending.
