USA: Tesla introduces V2L adapters for Model Y Premium

Tesla has introduced a new Vehicle-to-Load adapter (V2L) in the United States. This accessory, available for around $80 at the Tesla store, is initially intended for the “Model Y Premium” models in the U.S. The base versions will therefore be excluded for now.

V2L is a basic function for two-way charging that is being included in more and more models: it allows external devices to be powered using electricity from the drive battery. Tesla currently offers this feature in the U.S. only on the top-tier Model Y Performance and Cybertruck models. Starting now, Tesla is also extending this function to Model Y variants with the “Premium” designation. The adapter required for this costs $80 on Tesla’s website and works in combination with a so-called Gen-3 Mobile Connector. The adapter is inserted into the main housing of the Mobile Connector, providing a standard U.S. 120-V household outlet with 20 amps and 2.4 kilowatts of power.

In the Tesla store, the adapter is described as compatible with the Cybertruck and the Model Y Performance and Premium versions. However, Teslarati reports that the adapter does not work with older Model Y models. As a result, owners of first-generation Model Y vehicles (prior to the introduction of the Juniper series) are generally excluded. Those who purchased a Model Y before Tesla renamed the trim options to “Premium” and “Standard” also seem unable to use the adapter according to Teslarati. This was the case in October 2025.

Outside the U.S., Tesla launched a V2L adapter in China last year. In Europe, the introduction of a factory-installed V2L function is still pending.
