Renault UK has confirmed a series of subtle updates to help the Renault 5 stay at the top of the electric supermini heap.

The retro-inspired hatchback now travels further on a charge thanks to tweaks to the bodywork and battery systems, and features new onboard technology to enhance the driving experience.

The changes were previously announced for European markets but have now been confirmed for the UK, with no price changes.

All versions of the Renault 5 are now more efficient than before thanks to a new wing mirror design and new lower body trim, along with revisions to the battery management systems. The minor adjustments allow the 40kWh model to travel up to 197 miles – three miles further than before. The 52kWh version, meanwhile, can now manage 259 miles on a charge – an eight-mile increase.

As before, the UK won’t be getting the entry-level powertrain offered to European buyers, which now uses the 108bhp motor and 36.5kWh battery from the Twingo.

Away from the drivetrain, Renault has two new exterior colours – Flame Red and Shadow Grey – which are optional depending on trim level and will be available later in the year. These and all the other paint options are available with a new selection of decals for the roof and doors. The Midnight Blue on techo+ and iconic+ trims now has a contrasting red roofline.

Sadly, it doesn’t look like UK buyers will get the option of the gold “Techno” wheels sold in Europe which, when paired with the’s Midnight Blue paint, echo the look of the famous Clio Williams of the 1990s (below).

Disappointingly for fans of the current Heather Yellow seat trim, it has been replaced with a more subdued Heathered Blue.

Other interior changes include an upgraded and magnetic 15W wireless phone charger in the centre console, a new 4G-compatible e-call service and the introduction of Google Gemini to the infotainment system.

The MySense drive mode system has also been replaced with a new “smart” driving system that automatically switches between driving modes depending on driving style. As a result, the MySense button has been removed from the steering wheel, although drivers can still adjust modes independently via the touchscreen or voice command.

The updated Renault 5 is available to order now, with prices remaining the same as before. Thanks to the Electric Car Grant, the range starts at £21,495 for the 40kWh Evolution trim, with the 52kWh Techo+ trim priced from £23,945.
