Geely 2.2 MW charge

Going from 10% to 70% in less than 5 minutes — that’s BYD’s claim. But it won’t be the fastest charging option on the market any longer. Geely is set to break the 4-minute mark.

While competitors were shaving off a few seconds to claim 10% to 80% charging in around 10 minutes, BYD made a big splash with its second-generation Blade battery. The promise of reaching 70% in 5 minutes and 97% in 9 minutes helped boost sales.

More than just a claim, the manufacturer offers a complete ecosystem with a rapidly expanding range of compatible devices and widespread deployment of charging stations. But a fierce rival is emerging on the horizon.

Geely clearly refuses to back down against its domestic rival. The company already introduced its Golden Brick Battery in April, which achieves results similar to BYD’s. But now it promises charging in under 4 minutes, with a maximum power output of… 2.2 MW.

Nevertheless, BYD’s strength remains its ability to deploy its new batteries across a wide range of vehicles, regardless of price. The Blade 2.0 batteries are installed in affordable SUVs like the new Yuan Plus, as well as in Denza’s high-end models. This applies to both electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. It has also promised 20,000 compatible charging stations in China by the end of this year, and has already installed more than half of them. Will Geely perform as well?
