One out of three new cars in Europe is electric.

One in three new cars in Europe is electric: we’re almost there, with market share already exceeding 30% as of September.

One in three new cars: 416,000 units sold in September

It might be due to the high price of fuels, which remains unaffordable. Or it could be because of the arrival of battery-powered models at more accessible prices... The fact is that the boom in electric vehicles continues across Europe. With one exception: Italy. In September, 416,433 were sold, a 59.9% increase, raising their share of the market to 30.5%, up from 21.1% a year earlier. Over the first nine months, the total reached 2,549,810 units (+41.9%), with their market share rising from 18.1% to 24.2%. Rechargeable plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) are also being sold: 164,470 were registered in September (+24%), accounting for 12.1% of the market compared to 10.7% in September 2025. In short, vehicles with charging capabilities together account for 41.2%, an impressive figure.

The only downside is Italy: few vehicles are sold there

The ongoing issue remains the uneven distribution of electric vehicle adoption across major markets. In September, there was a significant surge in France (+107.5%), Germany (+97.4%), and Spain (+71.7%). Italy also saw good growth (+47.3%), but it started from such low levels that even this figure appears modest. Over the first nine months, Italy recorded the second-highest percentage increase (+66.7%), after France (+79.1%) and ahead of Germany (+58.1%) and Spain (+39.5%). Yet the same problem persists: absolute numbers and market share (8%) are still far behind those in other European countries. There is no indication that the situation will change by 2027. Even Tesla, which continues to achieve impressive results in Europe, struggles in Italy. We remain the exception—positive or negative? It’s up to you to decide...
