Electric sports cars are either hated or loved. Otherwise, tell Ferrari’s CEO, Benedetto Vigna, who saw how, just months ago, the first Ferrari electric car—the Ferrari Luce—faced criticism from all sides. Yet the latest Tesla Roadster, despite being released years late, has received only praise.

This is acknowledged even by the Italian manufacturer’s own CEO, who, in an interview with the Transalpine media outlet Quattroroute, did not hesitate to “thank” Elon Musk for the launch of the new Tesla and rated two of its key aspects an “10/10.”

Ferrari Gives In to the Tesla Roadster: What Are the Reasons?

Vigna himself stated in this interview that he yields to the Tesla Roadster and Elon Musk as proof that, in “an industry considered outdated,” it is still possible to take risks and create disruptive innovations: “There’s still a lot to be done in the automotive sector, and we must keep dreaming.”

Ferrari’s CEO explained that he was particularly impressed by Tesla’s ability to “innovate and take risks.” He gave the company’s new model a 10/10 in two key areas: “I give it a 10 for technology and a 10 for communication—it was an amazing presentation,” he said.

Ferrari Luce vs Tesla Roadster: Similar Concepts

The risks, according to Ferrari’s CEO, stem from the new Tesla Roadster — a risk he believes his brand has already faced with the controversial Ferrari Luce… and which he supports personally: “The only way to innovate is to do it concretely, accepting the inevitable mistakes that come with exploration. If a project has a 100% chance of success, then it’s not truly innovative.”

Vigna’s philosophy aligns with Ferrri’s own, which he summarizes as follows: “We are guided by four fundamental principles: exploring emerging trends without dogmatism, leveraging our experience, challenging the status quo, and addressing unmet needs, such as eliminating unnecessary screens and returning to more tactile and essential controls.”

These principles were brought to the fullest expression in the latest Ferrari model, for which the brand’s CEO acknowledges that Ferrari “would not have achieved the same results” without collaborating with Jony Ive—former Apple designer and creator of the Luce interior—and Australian designer Marc Newson.

Vigna explained that “while this new approach may initially face some resistance, combining our experience with LoveFrom [Ive and Newson’s company] has allowed us to find answers to questions we would never have considered before.”
