According to a recent E.On survey, just under a quarter of electric vehicle owners switched to an electric car only since the beginning of 2025. The survey also shows that 63 percent of electric vehicle owners charge their vehicles most frequently at home.
In Saarland, 73 percent of electric vehicle owners cite their home wallbox as the most common charging location. Similar high rates are seen in Baden-Württemberg (71%) and Bavaria (68%), where many electric vehicle owners prefer using their own wallboxes.
In addition to charging at home, the workplace is becoming an increasingly important charging location: 11 percent charge most frequently at their employer’s facility, 10 percent at the growing number of fast charging stations in cities, and another 7 percent at urban standard charging stations.
"One's own home charging station remains the top priority as the most important charging location. At the same time, there are increasingly more options today to charge electric vehicles in a way that fits daily life. Employers, in particular, are offering more charging spots," says Martin Endress, who is responsible for customer services at E.On Deutschland's management team. According to the survey, 54 percent of working electric vehicle owners can charge at their employer’s location, up from 46 percent the previous year. One-third of working electric vehicle owners can use these facilities for free.
"The growing variety of charging options allows more people to easily get started with electric mobility—even if no charging setup is available at home," says Endress.
