All finalists for Car of the Year, Europe’s most prestigious automotive award, are electric vehicles. This marks a dramatic shift in the history of the award.

They are the Bmw iX3, Cupra Raval, Hyundai Ioniq 3, Kia EV2, Renault Twingo, Volkswagen ID.Polo, and Volvo EX60. The award for Car of the Year (COTY) will be presented on January 8 at the 2027 Brussels Motor Show. This list represents a groundbreaking shift in the history of automobiles across the continent, with electric vehicles dominating completely. In fact, the award’s website describes it as a “historic turning point, the electric revolution has arrived.” The finalists were selected by a jury of 64 specialized journalists from 25 countries, after reviewing 38 models that had previously made it to the long list before reaching the short list. It won’t be the first time the award goes to an electric vehicle, though. Renault won it in 2025 with the Renault 5-Alpine A290 and in 2024 with the Scenic.

These seven finalists will participate on November 25-26 in the final stage of the event. The two-day competition will see them competing in tests and evaluations at the Balocco (Vercelli) track, which will also host the COTY jury’s general assembly. Each judge will have 25 points to distribute among at least five of the seven finalists, with a maximum of 10 points per vehicle. It is not allowed to assign the same score to the top two finishers, and each vote must be accompanied by a reason. The evaluation criteria include design, safety, comfort, performance, technological innovation, environmental impact, and cost-performance ratio. We recall that just a few days ago, Vaielettrico also awarded its 2026 Car of the Year prize, selected by a jury of 15 experts. It went to the Leapmotor T03, which received the Vaielettrico Award.
