MG does not want to waste time after the strong commercial start for one of its latest electric cars. The new MG 07, also known as the MG7 EV, received 42,000 orders in its first 20 days on sale in China, and the company is now working to expand its lineup with a second body style.
The first spy photos show a family-oriented version of the MG 07 undergoing tests on Chinese roads. The prototype remains heavily camouflaged, but it clearly reveals an extended roof and a much more vertical rear hatch. It also features a particularly interesting detail on the windshield: a LiDAR sensor that is not currently available on the sedan model.
MG prepares a family-oriented body with more space
The upcoming variant will retain much of the sedan’s design, especially from the front to the B-pillar. From there, a significantly longer roof line extends toward a practically vertical trunk lid. The images also show a small upper spoiler and horizontal rear fins that appear to extend toward the center of the body.
MG has not yet released its dimensions. For reference, the sedan measures 4,985 mm in length, 1,920 mm in width, and 1,480 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,950 mm. The family version is expected to have very similar dimensions, though it will benefit from its new rear design to offer a more practical trunk and greater vertical space for luggage.
This would not be the first time MG has opted for an electric family vehicle. The MG5 Electric sold in Europe was for years one of the few alternatives with this body style in the electric vehicle market. However, the new MG 07 Wagon would belong to a clearly higher category in terms of size, performance, and technology.
A LiDAR Signals Major Technological Advances
The current sedan uses a solution developed in collaboration with Momenta, relying on cameras and radars but without a LiDAR. The new sensor could enhance the vehicle’s ability to recognize its surroundings and support more sophisticated assisted navigation functions. MG has not yet specified which system will ultimately be used in the family model or what its capabilities will be.
The interior is not fully revealed in these initial photographs either, though it is expected to retain the technological layout of the sedan. It features a large central floating screen, separate digital instrumentation, and a multimedia system powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 chip.
Up to 530 HP and 42,000 orders in just 20 days
The MG 07 was launched in China at a price ranging from 169,800 to 219,800 yuan, roughly equivalent to 22,220 to 28,800 euros at current exchange rates. It received an impressive initial response, with MG reporting 42,000 orders in its first 20 days on the market—a figure particularly significant for a model that sits above the brand’s most affordable electric vehicles.
The sedan is available in rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive versions. The former delivers 245 horsepower, while the latter combines two engines to achieve 530 horsepower. Depending on the version, it is equipped with either 64 or 77 kWh batteries and offers ranges of between 530 and 650 km according to the Chinese CLTC cycle.
Alternatively, there is a plug-in hybrid option that consists of a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated engine producing 110 horsepower. This is paired with a front electric motor delivering 204 horsepower and a 30 kWh LFP battery, providing up to 245 km of electric range and a total range of over 1,740 km. As of now, it has not been confirmed whether this family car will feature exactly this powertrain or when it will be officially unveiled. We also do not know if MG plans to market it outside of China.
