Toyota is likely developing a range extender for China
The Japanese automaker Toyota appears to be planning to launch an electric vehicle with a range extender in China, meaning it will have a small internal combustion engine to extend driving range. According to a news agency report, 400,000 units of this model are expected to be produced by 2028.

To strengthen its presence in the world’s largest electric vehicle market, Toyota appears to plan to produce and sell at least one range extender model in China going forward. This is reported by the well-informed news agency Nikkei Asia, citing insiders. It would mark Toyota’s first foray into the field of electric vehicles with range extenders, as that is exactly what the term refers to.
Such vehicles have a battery-electric drive system along with a small internal combustion engine that is intended to increase the vehicle’s range beyond what the battery capacity alone can provide. However, these range extender engines do not function as direct drives for the axles and tires but rather act as generators that supply additional power to the vehicle’s electric drives and batteries.
Toyota Follows Li Auto in Range Extender Strategy
Although charging infrastructure in Chinese cities is already considered good to very good, range extender models are particularly useful for trips to rural areas. The Li Auto brand has made range extenders a hallmark of its offerings. Later, other manufacturers also joined in with similar models, such as Aito, Leapmotor, Xpeng, and most recently Xiaomi with its new subbrand SkyNomad. Even Volkswagen released its first China-exclusive vehicle with a range extender this year—something Li Auto has already challenged. Meanwhile, Chinese authorities have only recently responded to the growing market by establishing more specific technical requirements and testing procedures for range extender systems.
Specifically, according to the agency report, Toyota plans to start producing several hundred Range Extender vehicles per month in China in April 2027. Production is expected to scale up rapidly thereafter: Toyota apparently aims to reach an annual production of around 200,000 units by 2027 and increase it to about 400,000 units by 2028.
Toyota entered the New Energy Vehicles (NEV) market relatively slowly. The first vehicle they brought to China in 2022 was the global E-SUV model bZ4X. The E-sedan bZ3, developed in collaboration with BYD and FAW, was the first vehicle created specifically for the Chinese market. In 2025, they introduced the E-SUV bZ3X developed jointly with GAC, followed by the electric SUV coupe bZ5, which again relied on BYD and FAW’s technology. With the E-sedan bZ7 launched in 2026 alongside GAC, Toyota continues to expand its China-specific model lineup.
