Toyota updated the bZ5 for 2027. It features more ADAS features, but sales in China fell to 529 units.
FAW Toyota unveiled the 2027 model of the Toyota bZ5 in China, marking the first major refresh approximately 14 months after the car’s market debut in June 2025. The listed prices remained unchanged, but they were temporarily reduced by 20,000 yuan, bringing them to the range of 109,800–179,800 yuan.
This move is quite clear. Toyota isn’t improving the power or battery capacity; instead, it’s focusing on driver assistance systems, as there’s no denying the weak demand for the bZ5.
Toyota bZ5 2027 gets new ADAS from Momenta
The most significant change in the refreshed vehicle is the Toyota Pilot system. It now runs on Momenta 6.0, based on the R6 model from China’s Momenta company. The previous version used Momenta 5.0.
The manufacturer mentions a computing power of 544 TOPS and support for urban navigation functions with driver assistance. In the Chinese market, it is no longer just a gadget but a must-have feature. Especially if competing with local brands that have been outperforming Japanese joint ventures in software and ADAS for several years.
On the occasion, FAW Toyota also unveiled its own IT’S TiME 4.0 technology framework for electrified and “smart” models in China. It sounds like a corporate slogan, but the direction is clear: more local electronics, less imported thinking.
Price and specifications without revolution
The official prices remain at 129,800–199,800 yuan, which is approximately 74,000–114,000 zł. On promotion, the car starts at around 64,000 zł. This reduction includes a 16,000 yuan cash discount and an additional 4,000 yuan credit for trading in an old vehicle.
In addition, there is 0% financing, a lifetime warranty for the first owner on the battery, engine, and control system, along with a free home charger.
What about the technology itself? No changes. The Toyota bZ5 features an engine in the front with a power output of 200 kW, or 268 HP. The batteries are supplied by BYD, specifically Blade Battery LFP packs with capacities of 65.28 kWh and 73.98 kWh. The declared range according to CLTC is either 550 km or 630 km. On paper, it looks good, but let’s leave CLTC to the Chinese.
The body is 4,780 mm long, 1,866 mm wide, 1,510 mm high, and has a wheelbase of 2,880 mm. Inside, it features a 15.6-inch screen, 10 JBL speakers, and 50 W wireless charging.
Sales show why this refresh was needed
Toyota introduced the bZ5 in June 2025 as a key model to compete with Chinese rivals on price and technology. However, the results have been poor. Sales peaked in September 2025, with 3,019 units sold.
Things got worse after that. In July 2026, retail sales of the bZ5 in China dropped by 64.59% year-on-year, to just 529 units.
This is the most interesting aspect of this launch. Toyota isn’t refreshing the bZ5 because it can, but because it must. The question is whether better ADAS alone is enough in a segment where Chinese manufacturers are simultaneously improving software, pricing, and launch speed.
