Tesla surprises everyone, what happened in Germany

Tesla’s registrations have resumed strong growth in Germany, Europe’s largest automotive market, but Chinese competitors continue to pose a significant challenge. As of October 2026, the American automaker’s sales figures were nearly quadrupled compared to the same month last year, reaching 2,932 units with a surge of 290.9%.
According to Reuters, this figure was reported by the Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt (KBA), Germany’s federal authority responsible for vehicle registrations. Its data show significant recovery, but it should be viewed within the context of a rapidly expanding electric vehicle market and increasingly fierce competition.
Tesla is growing, but BYD is growing faster
The October result represents a significant improvement compared to 2025, when Tesla registered around 750 vehicles in the same month. The month-over-month percentage growth is thus particularly notable, especially since it builds on a relatively low baseline, but it should not be considered in isolation: it follows a September in which the American manufacturer recorded 12,552 new registrations in Germany, a figure more than four times higher than that of October.

If we look at the first ten months of 2026, the American manufacturer achieved 47,742 registrations in Germany, representing a 206.1% increase compared to the same period last year. Yet even when compared to the average of the first nine months of 2026, which was around 4,980 cars per month, the 2,932 units registered in October still represent a fairly significant decline.
As for market shares, enthusiasm is cooling: in October, Tesla captured only 1.2% of the German market, far behind several Chinese competitors. For example, BYD registered 5,173 vehicles, accounting for 2% of the market, while Leapmotor reached 3,661 units, equivalent to 1.4%. Xpeng lags further behind with a 0.5% share. The comparison becomes even more interesting when looking at cumulative results: from January to October, BYD had a total of 47,961 registrations, but that’s just 219 more than Tesla. This minimal gap illustrates how fierce the competition is between the two manufacturers in the German market.

37% electric
Tesla's recovery comes amid particularly favorable conditions for electric mobility in Germany: according to KBA data, 254,492 new cars were registered in October, a 1.7% increase from the same month in 2025. Of these, 94,086 were fully electric, representing a 79.5% year-on-year increase. BEVs thus accounted for 37% of the market, becoming the most common type of vehicle among new registrations that month.
For comparison, non-rechargeable “full hybrid” vehicles totaled 67,432 units, while gasoline cars numbered 38,516 and diesel cars 23,882. Plug-in hybrids accounted for another 28,499 registrations. These figures illustrate how rapidly the German market is changing, where fully electric vehicles have now surpassed all other individual fuel types in monthly registrations.
