Tesla Semi for Europe offers decent range and excellent payload

Tesla has released the performance data for its electric truck, the Semi, in Europe ahead of IAA Transportation. The figures broadly correspond to the US version with the smaller battery. Customers can expect up to 800 kW of power, around 550 kilometres of range and a relatively high payload. In addition, Tesla is planning its own truck charging network in Europe.

Tesla Germany GmbH has revealed details of the specification of the European Tesla Semi and has also launched a dedicated German webpage for the electric truck (also available in other languages). However, the company remains tight-lipped about the market launch itself. Tesla only states that it will deliver the Semi to fleets across Europe, with customer deliveries set to begin in 2027. The email communication we received does not specify which markets will be prioritised. What is clear, however, is that Tesla plans to introduce a network of so-called Semi Service Centres and licensed workshops to provide service coverage.

But first, let’s look at the vehicle itself: Tesla is bringing the ‘Standard Range’ version to Europe. Whether the ‘Long Range’ version, with its range of up to 800 kilometres, will follow later, as it has in the US, remains unclear. On the new German Semi webpage, the model is referred to as ‘Semi Standard Range’. Tesla aims to position the tractor unit as an efficient and high-performance all-rounder for regional and long-haul transport.

Tesla Semi has a cab with a central driving position

First and foremost, the Semi features an unusual cab design, most notably its central driving position, which Tesla says provides ‘improved visibility’. The cab is also said to offer enough headroom to stand, a coat hook, and a heated and ventilated seat. In addition, acoustic glass and sound-insulating materials are used to reduce road noise in the cab.

In terms of its axle configuration, the Semi is a 6×4 tractor unit, meaning it has three axles, with the rear two driven. The European version adopts the powertrain of the US model, featuring three independent motors across the two rear axles. Tesla is keeping the exact configuration and the contribution of each individual motor under wraps for now. However, the total output is stated to be up to 800 kW. Tesla also emphasises the ‘instant torque and high power at any speed’ – an advantage, for example, when merging onto the motorway.

Tesla Semi charges at up to 800 kW DC

Tesla has not disclosed details about the battery ahead of the trade fair, but it does state that the European Semi will support megawatt charging at up to 800 kW DC. This is said to allow enough energy to be added in half an hour to recharge the battery to 60 per cent. The specification also applies to the US version, which strongly suggests that the same 548 kWh battery is installed. This is all the more likely because all Semi trucks for both the domestic and global markets are produced at Tesla’s Nevada plant. The batteries for the Semi come from Tesla’s own production and are based on 4680 cylindrical cells with NCMA chemistry.

The only minor differences compared with the largely identical US Semi concern range and consumption. For the European version, Tesla specifies an estimated range of 550 kilometres, while the US version achieves ‘approximately 325 miles’, equivalent to around 523 kilometres. Tesla Germany states energy consumption of 1.0 kWh/km, compared with 1.7 kWh/mile in the US – equivalent to 1.1 kWh/km.

This can be explained by the different weight limits and truck speeds in the US and Europe. In the US, the Semi is a Class 8 truck with a maximum gross vehicle weight of up to 80,000 lb (around 36.3 tonnes), while trucks are typically allowed to travel at between 55 and 80 mph (approximately 88 to 128 km/h), depending on the state and road type. In Europe, the Semi is limited to 40 tonnes, and trucks on motorways are usually restricted to 80 or 90 km/h.

Tesla also notes in the fine print on its website that the 550-kilometre range and specified consumption are estimates based on a gross train weight of 40 tonnes, a speed of 80 km/h and a temperature of 20 degrees Celsius on a flat road. The figures take into account a special ‘Aero Kit’ and a dry van semi-trailer according to California standards.

This once again highlights the export character of the Semi. We will find out how the range and consumption perform with standard European trailers no later than the first deliveries next year. Regarding consumption, Tesla adds that ‘the choice of tyres, roof fairing, and semi-trailer configuration has a very significant impact on the projected consumption’.

Two additional figures that Tesla has revealed from the specification sheet ahead of IAA Transportation are a kerb weight of under 9.1 tonnes and an electric power take-off (ePTO) of up to 25 kW. The kerb weight is particularly interesting because it allows the potential payload to be calculated. Assuming a standard European trailer with a gross weight of around 6.3 tonnes, the European Semi would offer a payload of approximately 24.6 to 26.6 tonnes, depending on whether the 40-tonne limit or the special e-truck weight allowance of up to 42 tonnes is used as the permissible gross vehicle weight.

If this calculation is confirmed, Tesla would initially enter the European market with a payload-optimised truck, sacrificing range in the process. The 550 kilometres quoted by the manufacturer is not a new benchmark in Europe anyway: Volvo Trucks leads the way here with its FH Aero Electric, closely followed by corporate sister Renault Trucks with the E-Tech T 780. These offer ranges of up to 700 and 660 kilometres, respectively.

However, range as a headline argument for everyday suitability quickly loses relevance in logistics operations if it comes at too great a cost to payload. For its European debut, Tesla has opted for a version with a smaller battery and, in return, a higher payload. Another key factor is fast charging, where Tesla aims to offer megawatt charging at up to 800 kW.

Tesla makes a notable statement in its announcement: “High-performance charging is designed for commercial use: The Semi is engineered to recharge a significant portion of its energy during a short stop at a Tesla Megacharging network station. This keeps the trucks productive and schedules on track. The Tesla Megacharger network comprises ultra-fast charging stations that enable drivers to get back on the road more quickly.”

On its website, Tesla confirms its intention to offer such a network in Europe. It describes this as an ‘expanding public’ network with conveniently located sites. Tesla distinguishes between ‘Megachargers’ with the aforementioned charging power of up to 800 kW and ‘Basechargers’ with 120 kW charging power for longer stays at depots and overnight charging. The latter solution is likely to use CCS systems. These are said to ‘increase the Semi’s range by up to 60 per cent in four hours’. Further details about the rollout plans have not yet been made public.

Operating costs as a selling point

Tesla Germany primarily markets the imported model as a fully electric tractor unit with lower operating costs than conventional trucks. The company states: “The Semi was designed from the ground up as an electric truck and is intended to revolutionise freight transport. It is based on Tesla’s expertise in battery technology, electric powertrain, software, and manufacturing to meet the demands of modern logistics.” Tesla also highlights remote diagnostics, over-the-air software updates and reduced maintenance requirements as ways for operators to save time.

For service and repairs, Tesla plans to establish the aforementioned Semi Service Centre network, supplemented by unspecified ‘Mobile Service on-site’ support for drivers. Tesla-certified repair workshops will also be available when the Semi launches. The company also plans to stock spare parts at its Semi Service Centres. Tesla explains: “The distribution centres will also carry a complete range of spare parts to minimise any downtime.”

Tesla also plans to make its fleet management platform, Tesla for Business, available to future truck customers. Last year, the manufacturer initially announced the platform for passenger car fleet customers in Europe. The portal allows users to manage vehicle and driver access and provides real-time vehicle data on charging status, tyre pressure and energy consumption. It also enables users to book service appointments, approve cost estimates and process invoices.
