Tesla is rebuilding its navigation system using AI. Custom maps and full voice control

Tesla is diving into deep waters. It claims it will completely rebuild the navigation system using artificial intelligence. This could be a result of top-down pressure (Elon Musk: “You need to see how xAI performs”), but it might also be an independent decision driven by previous issues with map updates (outdated, malfunctioning, etc.; per Elektrowoz editorial speculation). The new navigation system is designed to communicate with the driver verbally and allow them to modify routes without touching the central screen.
New maps and navigation in Teslas powered by artificial intelligence. Already available in software v15 (version 15.x)
Tesla uses several independent services to display maps and plan routes. The preview relies on data collected by Google, the maps themselves come from the user-updated system OpenStreetMap, and the route planning mechanism uses the Valhalla algorithm, which also pulls information from the car’s computer and takes into account the need for charging stops. As a result, it sometimes happens that the route goes through farmland (at least in the visualization) or follows an incorrect, suboptimal path.

While Tesla buyers in the United States don’t complain much about map accuracy relative to actual infrastructure and navigation features, in Europe, map updates are a lottery. This is especially true on modernized sections, which are numerous as our infrastructure continues to develop. That’s why the new navigation system is intended to rely on artificial intelligence. Additionally, mapping is also supposed to be carried out using AI.
Tesla claims it will create a completely new architecture for maps to achieve this goal. In version 15 (v15) of the software, it is intended to determine the start and end points of trips. It will take over handling destinations, route guidance, and parking in the coming months. Tesla’s new navigation system is designed to learn the owner’s needs, “knowing them better than they do themselves,” and also share its insights across the entire Tesla fleet [through data exchange with the manufacturer’s servers]. This is because maps and navigation will be developed based on the collective intelligence of the vehicles.
The system currently under development is intended to use voice control, allowing conversations about different routes and navigation changes without touching the central screen. We can therefore assume that the driver will be able to ask the car to drive to a destination, but interrupt it along the way to take a break for a good meal. Or a poor meal in an area smelling of used oil, but at least one that includes charging (see: Chata Walichnowska, Prusak).
