Tesla Model Y captured at the Nürburgring. We’re left to guess the launch date for sales in Europe. July? October?

The German portal Carwow has obtained photos of the Tesla Model Y L on the Nürburgring track (Germany). The vehicle is beginning to appear around the world, with the first shipment arriving in Japan, and it has been made available in the United States, Puerto Rico, and the United Arab Emirates. It is practically destined for Europe, having received homologation there earlier than on the American continent — so the only question left is whether the manufacturer will decide to start selling it now or perhaps on Thursday in four weeks.

Tesla Model Y Long Wheelbase, or Tesla Model Y with a Longer Wheelbase

When the car debuted in the United States, we heard for the first time that the Tesla Model YYY, or Tesla Model Y L, got its “L” from Long Wheelbase, referring to its long wheelbase. Indeed, the wheelbase increased from 2.89 meters in the standard Model Y to 3.04 meters in the L version. We regularly remind readers about the dimensions of the Tesla Model Y L because the figures cited online, compiled by artificial intelligence systems, are often hallucinations. When in doubt, it’s best to refer to the manufacturer’s official sources.

In American customer communications, the car was described as Tesla’s biggest launch of the year, while the German site Carwow showed photos of the vehicle in light camouflage at the Nuerburgring (illustration above; more here). A visit to the track doesn’t necessarily mean sales will begin, but we’re not aware of any case where Tesla showed up there with a vehicle that later didn’t make its market debut on the Old Continent. The remaining question is the date: since plans were in place in July to add 1,000 employees at Gigafactory Berlin to boost production to 6,200 cars per week, manufacturing of the car could be underway already.

But it might also be about satisfying South Korea’s demand, as the country eagerly purchases the classic Tesla Model Y. In that case, another clue would be the planned further increase in staffing at Giga Berlin and raising production to 7,500 units per week starting in October 2026. The configurator could therefore go live at the beginning of August. Or at the start of October, so as not to put potential Model Y buyers in too difficult a choice.

And how can you tell if it’s a Tesla Model Y L on the track rather than a regular Model Y? The easiest clue is the wheels—20-inch Uberhelix tires are not available on any other version of this crossover. Additionally, due to the car’s body shape, the rear window in the Model Y has a shape similar to an spherical triangle, while in the Model Y L the lower edge is longer and more sharply angled, to the point where you might wonder if it’s actually a rectangle. Of course, the new variant is easiest to identify from inside, as the second row features two separate captain’s seats, whereas the regular version has a sofa there.

The Model Y L cabin can accommodate up to 6 passengers, with an expected range of 670 WLTP units for this version. The maximum range is 681 units with the 19-inch Machina 2.0 wheels. Prices for the Launch version of the car are expected to start around 295,000 Polish zlotys.
