The Tesla Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive has a longer range, 520/534 -> 572 WLTP units. Is it the CATL battery plus the 4DU motor or... the tires?

In Tesla Model 3 configurator, the cheapest version of the car, Tesla Model 3 RWD, now has a greater range of 572 WLTP units. Previously it was 520 WLTP units, or 534 WLTP units with Prismata wheels, but the situation isn’t as simple as it might seem. The Tesla Bonus, a discount of 18,750 zlotys, is now only available if we surrender our old car as part of the trade-in. Fortunately, it probably doesn’t need to be driven — it just needs to be registered in our name.

Tesla Model 3 RWD is slightly better for the same price

The previous 520 WLTP units represented the certified range for the 19-inch Nova wheels. With 18-inch wheels featuring traditional Aero covers, the manufacturer claimed an estimated range of 554 units but tried to downplay this figure. It’s easy to calculate that the currently advertised range for the 18-inch wheels is only 3.2 percent higher than the previous estimate. Buyers will also have to accept that Prismata covers were installed on the wheels—fortunately, they look better in person than in pictures.

Looking at the increased range, it’s easy to assume that the car uses exactly the same battery as the Tesla Model Y RWD, namely one based on CATL LFP cells with a capacity of 64 (~61) kWh. It’s also possible that it features the fuel-efficient 4DU engine—just speculation—so the Model Y RWD won’t dominate the range rankings for long. Tesla claims it’s simply due to… new tires (source). Additionally, 572 WLTP units equate to approximately 489 kilometers of real-world range at 90 km/h, 343 kilometers at 120 km/h, and 263 kilometers at 140 km/h [preliminary calculations by Elektrowozu’s editorial team].

The new CATL battery maintains high power levels for a considerable length of time. As our reader noted, the best time it took to reach 10 to 80 percent charge was 23 minutes, while it took half an hour to go from 10 to 90 percent — and this was only at lower temperatures to keep the cells from getting too hot. The price of the Tesla Model 3 RWD with basic equipment starts at 174,990 złoty. There are only three paint colors to choose from (white, black, and dark gray), just one black leatherette interior, and an audio system with 7 speakers. The car’s price can be reduced by 18,750 złoty, to 156,240 złoty, if you trade in an older vehicle.

Editor’s note from Elektrowozu: considering the performance-to-price ratio, the Tesla Model 3 RWD seems to be only surpassed by the Tesla Model Y RWD... Slightly more expensive, but it offers several advantages over the electric sedan (higher tow capacity, higher roof height, larger trunk).
