The Tesla Model 3 will get technology from the Cybercab. The change is expected to arrive still this year.

Tesla plans to install in the Model 3 the inverter electronics developed for Cybercab. It has fewer components and allows the use of parts from various suppliers.

Robotaxi technology is making its way into the Model 3

The development of Cybercab brings Tesla technologies that can also be used in its regular electric vehicles. New inverter electronics are set to be installed in the Model 3 by 2026. The automaker designed them with simplified manufacturing in mind.

Development head of powertrains Nick Verzini described this plan during a factory tour with Munro Live. He specifically mentioned the circuit board layout and power stage that Tesla prepared for Cybercab’s powertrain.

The inverter is an important component of electric drives. It converts direct current from the traction battery into alternating current for the electric motor and helps control its operation. The new design of this electronics aims to simplify its production and application across different models.

Fewer Components and a Wider Supplier Selection

Compared to the current solution in the Model 3, the new electronics have significantly fewer components. The designers also considered the option of sourcing parts from multiple manufacturers. This allows Tesla to reduce its dependence on any single supplier.

The developers maintained compatibility with the existing powertrain design. As a result, the new assembly can be used beyond the Cybercab. Sharing technology across multiple models gives the automaker the flexibility to simplify production.

Verzini confirmed that the assembly can also be installed in the Model Y’s powertrain. The timeline for its potential introduction into this SUV remains unknown. The specific plans for this year focused on the Model 3 in the discussion.

Cybercab Also Introduced Other Powertrain Changes

The power unit of the Cybercab has other design features as well. The electric motor is located at the front and operates with a gear ratio of 11:1. Approximately 9:1 is used in a range of other Tesla vehicles. This setup is suited to the intended operation of robotaxis.

Tesla has also moved the motor’s cooling channels to a cheaper aluminum cover and replaced the electric oil pump with a mechanical one. The company has not announced whether these changes will be adopted in the Model 3. The confirmed change relates to the electronics of the inverter.

It remains unclear to customers whether this new feature will affect the car’s specifications. Tesla has not mentioned longer range, higher performance, or a lower selling price. The main benefits described are simpler manufacturing and greater flexibility in selecting suppliers.
