Tesla Emergency Drive Away: an owner paid $539 just for clicking the button

The Tesla owner connected to a Supercharger, switched to drive mode, and pressed Activate on the new Emergency Drive Away feature. Soon after, he remembered about the cable and stopped the car. The vehicle didn’t move even a centimeter, yet it still received an alert that can only be canceled by service, resulting in a $539 charge for inspecting the charging port. Several cases reported in the U.S. show that the service procedure is triggered simply by pressing the button.

How Emergency Drive Away from a Supercharger Works

Tesla introduced Emergency Drive Away on October 1 in the 2026.38.3 update, according to Teslarati. This feature allows drivers to leave a U.S. Supercharger with the cable still connected when staying there poses a risk greater than damaging the equipment. The driver switches the car to drive mode, holds the brake, and presses Activate. A screen warns that driving with the cable connected will damage the car and the charger, and that short video clips from cameras will be sent to Tesla. Once confirmed, the Supercharger releases the connector lock, and the clamp detaches as the car moves away.

Tesla Charging did not hide the consequences. Repairing the charging station can cost up to $25,000 (depending on location), a visit to a service center to check the port is required, and intentional misuse will result in additional penalties. The company did not state, however, that the service requirement arises when pressing Activate, that is, before the cable even disconnects.

Here is a lesson for Tesla owners: Do not press Activate on the new Emergency Drive Away feature on your Tesla, as service costs $539 to inspect the charging port and resolve the alert. Yes, even if you didn’t move the car at all. pic.twitter.com/NZJENw4SQv

Bills ranging from $0 to $539

The $539 case was described by Yaro, who posts Tesla service issues on X under the handle @Tutrifour. In service mode, the car displayed the alert BMS_a228_EmergencyDriveAwayServiceRequired, yet it continued to charge despite the red message. Yaro wrote, “Don’t press Activate on the new Emergency Drive Away feature, because the service charges $539 to check the charging port and remove the alert. Yes, even if you haven’t moved the car an inch.” Tesla has not released a pricing list for such inspections nor commented on the post, so the amount comes from one specific order.

InsideEVs has gathered more cases from Reddit. One user tested the feature “out of curiosity”: he immediately returned to the P mode and manually removed the plug, yet still received an error requiring deletion only through the app, and the Supercharger was disabled. The service considered the visit a gesture of good faith and charged nothing. Another owner received an initial estimate of $255 but eventually paid $33.15. Yet another paid $178.20.

The range from $0 to $539 shows that there is currently no fixed fee for this service.

Teslarati defends the principle itself, as after pressing Activate, the car doesn’t know whether the connector latch is tightened, so it marks them for inspection just in case. Incidentally, the button came with its own price, which deters users more effectively than a warning screen.

The customer called because they received an active alert after tapping ACTIVATE on the new Emergency Drive Away feature. They didn’t actually drive away but were about to do so until they “remembered” they had the charge cable connected.

First real cable pulls

The first known practical use of this feature occurred in Austin during the F1 weekend. The driver likely activated it accidentally and pulled the Supercharger cable with them, and according to the Reddit video uploader, they only read the messages halfway through. Another video shows the charging station bending from the pull, with a part falling to the ground behind the departing car. Such drivers might not leave the service center without an invoice, especially if Tesla starts charging fees for charger repairs.

If a red message appears after accidentally changing the gear to P, simply return to P and disconnect the cable normally: via the screen, the Tesla app, or the button on the plug handle.
