According to reports, the Hohenbrunn traffic police stopped a Tesla Cybertruck on the A99 highway near Vaterstetten in the Ebersberg district of upper Bavaria early on Sunday morning, October 25, 2026. A 50-year-old Swedish man was driving the electric pickup and did not possess the required driver’s license. The officers then prevented him from continuing on his journey. The electric vehicle was traveling with Polish license plates.

The decisive factor was the Cybertruck’s allowable total weight of 4200 kilograms. This meant the vehicle exceeded the regular weight limit for driver’s license class B, which is 3500 kilograms, by 700 kilograms. According to the police, class C1 license would have been required for this specific case, as it generally permits driving vehicles with an allowable total weight of more than 3.5 to 7.5 tons. The Swedish driver could not produce such a license.

After the inspection, the Cybertruck was taken to the highway police station in Hohenbrunn. There, the vehicle was supposed to remain according to a police officer quoted by the tz until someone with an appropriate license could come and collect it. This ruled out further driving by the driver under inspection.

The Cybertruck does not have a standard European type approval and cannot be registered in Germany through the usual channels at present. However, the controlled unit of this electric pickup did have a Polish registration. According to the police, temporary participation in German road traffic on this basis was generally permitted.

The lack of a European type approval is also related to the technical registration requirements, which differ from those in its home market in the United States. For the Cybertruck, the key considerations are its angular stainless steel body and European requirements for pedestrian protection.

The Cybertruck has been delivered in North America since late 2023. The highly anticipated big success has not materialized for Tesla’s angular, futuristic pickup truck. So far, it has not reached Europe due to regulatory reasons. Here, according to Tesla’s local management, the Cybertruck might only have a chance as a one-off vehicle. André Thierig, the plant manager at Tesla’s factory near Berlin, said last year regarding hopes of it being sold in Europe: “I wouldn’t hold my breath on that right now.”
